‘40 ventilators are not working in Government Hospital for Chest and Communicable Diseases’
BJP Parliamentary Party District president Raveendra Medapati has said that the deaths due to COVID-19 are increasing in the district but the hospitals are unable to cope with the growing number of cases in the city and the district.
He said that the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) had witnessed 20 deaths on April 24 even as another 30 patients were waiting outside the hospital for beds. The BJP leader alleged that those, who required ventilator support, were dying on the streets. Mr. Raveendra alleged that around 100 patients were waiting for beds.

District Collector V. Vinay Chand has directed the officials to provide better services to COVID-19 patients.
At a review meeting with officials at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) here on Saturday, he enquired about the services being rendered by doctors, nurses and other staff at the hospital. He directed that a roster should be prepared to ensure that the staff work in three shifts. Doctors and other staff should be available to the patients in all wards, he added.
396 persons recover from coronavirus
For the third day in a row, the Visakhapatnam district reported more than 800 new COVID-19 cases. In the last 24 hours, the district recorded 810 new infections, taking the cumulative tally to 72,151 as on Friday morning.
The death toll also rose to 578 as three more persons succumbed to the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the COVID-19 bulletin released by Special Officer P.V. Sudhakar.
With the latest cases, the total number of cases and deaths reported in the district is 9,853 and 32 respectively.
The number of active cases also rose to 5,866. As many as 396 persons undergoing treatment for the virus have been recovered in the last 24 hours. This takes the total number of recoveries to 65,707.
Several people complain that they are unable to get the second jab
The second wave of COVID -19 is raging through the State and the district, and at this juncture, the district is facing an acute shortage of vaccines and due to deficiency of reagents the numbers of tests per day also have been reduced.
In this month so far, the district has recorded over 6,700 cases, averaging over 350 cases per day. The second wave is now full blown and on an average about 20% of the tests are turning out to be positives, said district COVID Special Officer and Principal of Andhra Medical College P.V. Sudhakar. At this juncture, when the only panacea is said to be mass inoculation, the programme is hit by shortage of doses.
