Tree-felling at Suhrawardy Udyan: HC hopes problems will be resolved through discussion

A High Court bench today expressed hope that the problems regarding tree felling at Suhrawardy Udyan will be resolved amicably through discussions between the government and environmentalists. We do not want to interfere with this issue at this moment. We hope that all the issues regarding Suhrawardy Udyan will be settled keeping a balance in a beautiful way as the government will take necessary decisions after consulting with the environmentalists including the writ petitioners, the HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice SM Maniruzaaman said.
Eight years ago, in May, a large crowd staged a sit-in at Gezi Park, next to Taksim Square, Istanbul s bustling public plaza in the downtown of its European side. People wanted to save the park s 600 trees that would soon be cut to clear space for a massive Ottoman-style shopping mall. What started as a local environmental movement quickly snowballed into a national agitation against heavy-handed government tactics.
The Gezi Park demonstration also revealed something fundamental and even universal: people s ecopsychology the emotional connection between humans and nature. When that connection is severed, humans feel pain. A growing body of research indicates that contact with natural environments contributes to improved health and psychological wellbeing. This is particularly evident in dense urban areas.
LDC Graduation: Committee formed to address challenges
The government has formed a 22-member committee to address the challenges that Bangladesh will face as a result of its transition from a least developed country (LDCs) into a developing one.
The committee headed by Ahmad Kaikaus, principal secretary to the prime minister, will carry out preparation, planning, implementation and monitoring to address the possible challenges and create an action plan to overcome those.
It is learnt that the committee will determine the sectors and the level of impact in the post-transition period. Moreover, it will map up the roles of the main responsibilities and associated ministries, divisions, and agencies designated for each sector.

“Our order is that the hearing will come before this court on May 20,” said Justice Mamnoon Rahman, senior judge of the bench. The attorney general “should tell them, verbally, not to cut any trees in the meantime”.
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin responded to this, saying: “I will speak to them immediately.”

The High Court on Tuesday issued a verbal order to halt cutting trees at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan till May 20.
Justice Mamunur Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman’s virtual bench gave the order while hearing a contempt of court petition against Ministry of Liberation War Affairs and three government officials.
The court directed Attorney General AM Amin Uddin to notify the authorities concerned and fixed May 20 for the next hearing on tree felling at Suhrawardy Udyan.
Advocate Manzil Murshid filed the contempt petition on May 9, three days after serving a legal notice to the respondents.
