HOI AN (Vietnam News/ANN): Hoi An has launched the Wake-Up Hoi An programme to revive the lantern decorations and tourism activities in the Old Quarter for Tet (Lunar New Year) after months deadlocked by Covid-19.
The programme will offer a promotion package for the first 1,000 tourists visiting Hoi An on three first lunar New Year days (Feb 12-14).
Each ‘lucky money’ gift will help tourists enjoy a night at luxury resorts.
Chairman of the Quang Nam Tourism Association, Phan Xuân Thanh said the programme was an initiative of 30 travel agencies, resorts and tour services to promote tourism activities among local visitors and foreign residents in Vietnam.
Currently, local banks issue both chip and magnetic strip cards.
The draft regulation aims to help meet the country’s approved roadmap of replacing all current magnetic strip cards with chip cards by Dec 31,2021.
The chip cards are compatible with EMV standards as well as the standards of international card organisations such as Visa, MasterCard, JCB and UnionPay.
International card-issuing organisations have asked Vietnamese banks to switch to chip cards that meet EMV standards to increase safety amidst a growing number of information thefts.
Security experts have also warned Vietnam delayed transition to chip technology could put the country at risk of becoming a haven for card criminals from around the world as it is among the dwindling number of countries where magnetic swipe cards are still prevalent.

The country climbed nine places from last year to 33rd in the Nation Brands 2020 list of the world’s 100 most valuable brands compiled by the UK independent branded business valuation and strategy consultancy.
According to Brand Finance, Vietnam, which has recorded staggeringly low Covid-19 cases and deaths, has emerged as one of the top locations within the Southeast Asian region for manufacturing and has become an increasingly attractive destination for investors, particularly from the US, that are looking to relocate their China operations following the fallout from the US-China trade war.
