BURLINGTON â The Wisconsin High School Theater Festival announced Dec. 11 that Burlington High Schoolâs one-act play, âMill Girls,â excelled across four award categories.
BHS was one of only 10 schools across Wisconsin recognized with an award in all four school-level categories â Criticsâ Choice, Directing, Ensemble and Crew.
The Criticsâ Choice award recognizes the highest standard of excellence at the state festival. The lead adjudicator for BHS remarked that the show tackled very difficult subject matter and a hard story to tell emotionally, but the cast and crew obviously worked hard to make the story meaningful on many levels.
Competing in the one-act during the fall is always an accomplishment for the cast and crew, but this year the students had to navigate COVID-19 protocols to submit a virtual performance using masks and social distancing.

For the 22nd year in a row Appleton North High School wins the Critic’s Choice Award at the Wisconsin High School Theatre Festival.
The school is the only one in the state to receive the award that many times in a row.
Technical Director Peter Abraham says because of COVID restriction all 18 actors performed their role in 18 different locations with 18 different laptops and 18 different broadband connections. He thinks that made for many technical challenges.
The cast and crew of 33 swept all award categories with an Outstanding Ensemble Acting award among others.
