WEDC grant hooks up rural Eau Claire County in pilot program with SpaceX Starlink
Eau Claire County has received a grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, for a pilot program to provide high-speed internet in rural areas.
As the county’s information systems director Dave Hayden explains, the service will be out of this world.
“We’re going to pilot SpaceX Starlink low orbit satellite technology, in an unserved an underserved area of southeastern Eau Claire County, just south of Augusta.”
The pilot project will provide high-speed internet to 50 rural homes and businesses. It’s being supported by a $27,000 grant from WEDC, as well as funding from a group of healthcare providers.

Three Lakes looks to revitalize downtown
Three Lakes has been accepted into the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation’s Connect Communities Program. It is an initiative that works with communities to advance downtown revitalization efforts. Three Lakes is one of nine communities in the state that were added to the program last month.
“The Three Lakes Chamber and the Forward Three Lakes Downtown Working Group are thrilled to be accepted into the Connect Communities Program,” said Jacqui Sharpe, associate director of the Three Lakes Chamber. “We cannot wait to dig into the education and training available to us as we continue our work toward a vibrant downtown.”
River Falls School District will receive âfab labâ grant dollars from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
The WEDC announced that 28 districts have been awarded a total of more than $635,000 to establish or expand local fabrication laboratory facilities. Prescott School District is among those.
âThe fab labs program engages students in science, math, and engineering, allowing them to create and invent all sorts of things from robots to 3D models,â Gov. Tony Evers said. âThe skills learned in Wisconsinâs fab labs can help prepare our kids for their future, including good-paying jobs in technology and manufacturing, which are critically important for our stateâs future and our economy.â

There was a certain inevitably to the news that the state of Wisconsin had finalized a renegotiated contract with Foxconn. This was a long time coming.
Donald Trump called it the “eighth wonder of the world.” The deal the Taiwanese manufacturing giant struck was to build one specific kind of LCD screen, and in the year between July 2017 when Wisconsin landed the deal and when work on the project officially began, Foxconn chose to build something else.
