Housing officials count unsheltered areas in Virginia Beach to help homelessness

Updated: 4:48 PM EST December 30, 2020 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Local housing officials are asking for help with looking for areas in Virginia Beach, where people have been seen living without shelter. Virginia Beach Housing and Neighborhood Preservation has extended its 2021 Point-in-Time Count from Jan. 27-31. This extension will help the city s Homeless Outreach Team to have more time to complete its street count. “Since launching this tool in 2018, we have been able to identify dozens of locations that we were unaware of where people were living unsheltered,” said Pam Shine, Homeless Service System Manager. “Every year, we try to ensure that the count is as thorough as possible, and it may be more challenging to do that without the many volunteers that usually help with our street count. It will be more important than ever to have the public’s input so that we can enhance our outreach efforts and help ensure that everyone who should be included is counted

Ceremony held for 25 Missoula homeless individuals who died in 2020

Kristy Pszanowski struggled to hold back tears as she remembered Kelly Fowler. She wore bright pink lipstick, she was just happy all the time, the lead Homeless Outreach Team member at the Poverello Center homeless shelter in Missoula, recalled. She called me sunshine. Last year she gave me a little ring that had a sun on it to remember her. Fowler was one of the 25 individuals experiencing homelessness in Missoula County that passed away in 2020. On Monday night, the longest night of the year, a Homeless Persons Memorial took place and streamed live in front of the Poverello Center and at the Johnson Street Community Shelter. The name of each person was painted on a sign and read aloud by the members of the Homeless Outreach Team, who work with and visit and get to know Missoula County s homeless population throughout the year.
