Blinken to visit Ukraine next week after Russian troop build-up

Mr Blinken’s visit on Wednesday and Thursday is intended “to reaffirm unwavering US support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement. Mr Blinken will meet Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and other officials during the trip. He “will also encourage continued progress on Ukraine’s institutional reform agenda, particularly anti-corruption action,” the statement read. Kiev has been battling pro-Russian separatists in the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions since 2014, after Moscow annexed the Crimean Peninsula. Tension between Moscow and the West flared again on Tuesday when Russia’s Black Sea fleet launched live-fire naval combat exercises. The US sent a coastguard vessel to the region.

The department said Blinken will visit London starting on Monday for a meeting of foreign ministers of the Group of 7 industrialized democracies and will then travel on to Kyiv amid a burst of concern over U.S. relations with Ukraine, including an FBI raid on former President Donald Trump s lawyer Rudy Giuliani and new questions about Russia’s intentions there.
