9 countries interested in acquisition of DRDO-developed Akash air defence missile system ANI | Updated: Dec 30, 2020 19:00 IST New Delhi [India], December 30 (ANI): Nine friendly foreign countries from Southeast Asia and Africa have shown interest in the acquisition of the DRDO-developed Akash air defence missile system, government sources said on Wednesday. After a clearance by the Union Cabinet today, a public sector unit under Defence Ministry will explore the opportunities of exporting the weapon system to these countries, they added. Earlier in the day, the Cabinet approved the export of Akash Missile System aiming to achieve the target of USD 5 billion of defence export and improve strategic relations with friendly foreign countries.

Highlights It is a Surface to Air Missile with a range of 25 kms. It was inducted in the Indian Air Force in 2014 and in 2015 in the Indian Army. New Delhi: The Cabinet on Wednesday (December 30, 2020) approved the export of Akash Missile System following which the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed that the decision would help India to improve its defence products. So far, Indian defence exports included parts/components etc. The export of big platforms was minimal. This decision by the Cabinet would help the country to improve its defence products and make them globally competitive, said Rajnath Singh.
