The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has removed the Black Separatist listing on its extensive hate map to underscore that white supremacist extremism is the most dangerous threat to national security while Black Separatism is rooted in valid concerns about how federal and state institutions treat Black people. We re collapsing the Black Separatist listing on our hate map, the SPLC s official Twitter account tweeted on Monday. Black separatism was born out of valid anger against very real historical and systemic oppression. The change to the SPLC hate map was announced by the SPLC s Intelligence Project on Oct. 8 as the organization sought to remove a false equivalence between White Nationalist and Black Separatist hate groups and to present the information about extremist groups more accurately and equitably.
As Mainers, we want to believe we live among tolerant, level-headed and community-minded people. And, for the most part, we have comfort that this is the mostly the case of our home state. But, to ignore the hate that exists in our state is to accept hate as a part of our Maine culture.
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting social and racial justice, there are more than 800 active hate groups across America including three active hate groups here in the state of Maine.
The organization identified these groups as active by having acted upon their extreme beliefs, including racism, in the past year.
February is
Black History Month, it’s something that no American of any race, color, or creed should forget. African Americans, the decendants of slaves and slaves themselves fought for freedom that was only at best was in the
promissory note of the
Emancipation Proclamation.
Those men, and women in the case of Harriett Tubman and Sojourner Truth, paved the way for freedom for African Americans and all others who benefited from what they fought for: women, Native Americans, Mexican Americans, and other Hispanics, Asian Americans, and LGBTQ Americans.
That promise being made then, must be kept today, to the descendents of this men, as well as all who benefited through their sacrifice: even the Southern Whites who at the time did not know then, or all too often today, that they too needed emancipation.

Michigan Is One Of The Top States For Hate Groups
Unfortunately, the great state of Michigan is also one of the great states for hate groups.
There are a lot of lists that it is nice to be a part of, like having one of the greatest cities in America to live in, one the best states to retire in, one of the best communities to raise a family, one of the best states for outdoor activities, being called Beer City USA and I could go on.
But it was very disappointing to learn that Michigan has topped another list. The Great Lakes State is also one of the top states for groups. That is a list no one wants to be on, (unless you re in a hate group).
