With many projects involving historic structures, the work turns out to be more than first imagined.
Such is the case with the ongoing exterior renovation of Coolspring Presbyterian Church on Log Cabin Hill Road west of Lewes.
The Greek Revival architecture-style church, built in 1854, is on the site of two previous churches dating back to 1726, making it one of the oldest houses of worship in the region.
As the church nears its 300th anniversary, one of the projects that church members agreed on was a major paint job for the exterior.
Unfortunately, the previous paint was latex and not oil-based, said Rick Bailey, owner of Coastal Colors, who has taken on the job as a mission. The choice of paint, unrelenting sun baking the outside and the age of the cypress shingles combined to form a perfect storm.

You know the drill by now. For nearly three decades, CITYVIEWâs Best Of Des Moines Poll has informed central Iowa about its biggest, best, brightest, tastiest, most fabulous, most effective, most fun, most entertaining, most interesting, its fittest and… You get the idea.
Being the best at something doesnât just happen. Rising to the top of the heap is hard work, but once itâs done, you might as well cash in. Being recognized as the Best Of Des Moines has changed many businesses and propelled them to places they previously wouldnât have thought possible. CITYVIEW expects that trend to continue.
When you hear about the Town Hall South Speaker Series, you probably think of the renowned writers, actors, politicians, journalists, scientists and more who speak at Upper St. Clair High School five times a year and engage our community in dialogue on key issues of our day.
But an equally important part of the Town Hall South mission is to provide outreach to the community through philanthropic gifts to a wide range of local organizations.
Since Town Hall South was organized as an outreach of Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1969, the series has donated nearly $650,000 to local organizations, with grants primarily focusing on children in need, Pittsburghâs homeless population, and women fleeing from violence and seeking to rebuild their lives.
