Two people were hurt in a two-vehicle wreck Friday afternoon in northern Wayne County. State police at the Carmi post say 22-year-old Madison P. Wilson of Cisne was stopped on U.S. Route 45 a quarter mile north of Wayne County Road 2000 North waiting for another vehicle to clear the roadway and was rear-ended by a vehicle, driven by 25-year-old Adam C. Kemplen of Fairfield. Police said Kemplen was distracted within the vehicle prior to the accident. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police ticketed Kemplen for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not wearing a seatbelt. The Wayne County Health Department reported one new case of the coronavirus Saturday, bringing the total number of cases for the county to 1795. The health department also reported one resident in the county isolating, and there have been 53 total deaths from the virus. After a COVID issue last week, Wayne County Sheriff Mike Everett says the county jail is back to normal, with isolations ended. This was the first outbreak of cases at the jail since the pandemic began, not counting random one-offs, and the sheriff praised his staff, correctional officers and deputies, for stepping up to keep things running smoothly. He also said he was in contact with Illinois State Police District 19, which was willing to aid the county as necessary as it worked through the isolations.
