FOX 2 - It is rare that a public servant is known by his first name only, but in Detroit that is how it was with Benny. On Thursday night Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon died of complications from COVID-19 at Henry Ford Hospital.
His death leaves behind a giant loss in law enforcement and in public service in the city. Condolences have come from every area of the state for the lifelong Detroiter from officials after he lost a long battle with COVID-19 at just 65 years old.

(WXYZ) â Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon has died at the age of 65 after a battle with COVID-19, 7 Action News has learned. Napoleon was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Nov. 19 and hospitalized two days later.
He was born in Detroit in 1955 and was entwined with Wayne County long before his public service. A Cass Tech grad, Napoleon received degrees from Detroit Mercy and Detroit College of Law before the start of his tenured law enforcement career in 1975.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, a longtime Detroit political leader and one-time mayoral candidate, died Thursday night after a long battle with COVID-19, a family member confirmed. He was 65.
Napoleon died at Henry Ford Hospital with family present, daughter Tiffani Jackson said. Remember his generosity, integrity and faithfulness as a public servant for over 45 years, she said.
News of Napoleon s death spread quickly Thursday night in the circles of government and political leaders.

Many in Wayne County, the city of Detroit and throughout the state honored Napoleon for his service.
