Napoleon died earlier this month after contracting COVID-19. He was 65. Benny Napoleon Credit Wayne County Napoleon was a longtime prominent figure in Metro Detroit law enforcement and politics. After joining the Detroit Police Department in the 1970s, he rose through the ranks to become police chief in 1998, serving in that position for three years. Napoleon later served as Deputy Wayne County Executive, and was appointed as sheriff in 2009, serving in that role until his death. He ran unsuccessfully for Detroit Mayor in 2013. Napoleon’s death has drawn condolences from political leaders across Michigan, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. His visitation services continue on Tuesday at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, followed by a private family funeral, which will be livestreamed.
