The daughter of a Haywood County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was killed outside a bar in 2008 is coming home to speak with students about her experience with gun violence. On the outside, it may have looked like just “girl talk,” but Ashlee Akins’ message to high school students at Liberty Technology Magnet High School on Thursday morning was much more. “A lot of people have a lot of advice, but a lot of people don’t want to put the action or the work in, and I’m here to do that,” said Akins, a published author, television personality and influencer.

(WMC) - Haywood County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victims in last Tuesday’s deadly plane crash. Officials say the victims have been identified as 55-year-old Charles Chad Wayne Garland and 74-year-old Marjorie Ann Garland of Houston, Texas. The mother and son were traveling to Murray, Kentucky to visit family when the FAA lost sight of the Piper P28R plane late Tuesday night near Bond Ferry Road and Prospect Lane in Brownsville.

A Houston mother and son were killed when their small plane crashed in rural west Tennessee. The victims, ages 74 and 54, had taken off from Houston on a flight to visit relatives in Tennessee, according to the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office. Their single-engine Piper Cherokee crashed into a swamp in rainy weather late Tuesday. It s not clear if the weather was a factor in the crash.  Searchers didn’t find the crash scene until Wednesday when a Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopter spotted wreckage in a heavily wooded area.

COVID-19 cluster found at Haywood jail

Haywood County Health and Human Services Agency has identified a COVID-19 cluster at the Haywood County Detention Center. Over the last week five incarcerated persons, all in the same pod, have tested positive for COVID-19. The entire population of the affected pod was tested after the initial case showed mild symptoms, four of the tests came back positive on April 14. All incarcerated persons in the pod have been in isolation since the first onset of symptoms and everyone is being tested every three days throughout the quarantine period per COVID-19 protocols. On April 17, the fifth person tested positive. Everyone connected with the pod where the cluster occurred will continue to isolate and quarantine until the 14-day period has passed.
