» Health Department: Smoky summer expected

It may not be smoky here yet, but with record-high temperatures and wildfires already scorching the west, you can expect smoky skies soon. The Whatcom County Health Department says wildfire smoke is hazardous to everyone’s health, but children under 18, seniors, those with asthma or other lung disease, pregnant women and smokers are at particular risk. The department says now is the time to prepare for smoky skies. Stay up to date on air quality, stock up on necessary medication, and plan to filter indoor air. When it’s very smoky, you may consider getting out of town.

By Joe Teehan July 7, 2021 5:58 pm KGMI The Whatcom County Health Department says the worrisome Delta variant of the coronavirus is another reason for all eligible residents to get vaccinated. The department says the variant hasn’t been detected in Whatcom County yet, but with hundreds of cases found in the Puget Sound region it might already be here or will be soon. The Delta is much more contagious than earlier varriants and all are more transmissible than the original coronavirus. Full vaccination is important as the two-dose Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been shown to be effective against the Delta and other variants.
