Letters: Dislike of Boris Johnson is no reason to destroy Scotland

RUTH Marr (Letters, April 6) tells us that everything is rosy in the field of education in Scotland. Yet in December 2019 John Swinney admitted that four children out of 10 from Scotland’s poorest areas are leaving primary school without achieving expected literacy levels. This means that they are going into secondary school with one hand tied behind their backs. Is it then not unexpected that they also underperform in secondary? In the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Scotland’s record in the subjects of reading, maths and the sciences has plummeted to pre-2012 levels. In the Scottish Parliament, these figures were described as shameful, appalling, and damming. Mr Swinney has been a disaster for Scotland’s education system and really should be considering his position. We used to have the best universities in the world, but now we only have one in the world top 30.

Snapping turbines proving popular with young Scots

More than a quarter of a million young Scots have taken a picture of a wind turbine while out and about in the Scottish countryside, a new survey has found. In the poll, almost half (45%) of 16-24 year olds questioned said they had snapped a picture of a turbine - and three quarters of those (75%) say they did so because they like the way it looked. Scotland s wind farms are now social media stars, with the country s largest site Whitelee ( pictured) tagged almost 13,000 times on Instagram. Pollsters Survation also asked Scottish people aged 16-24 for their views of renewable energy.

This is the key to powering an independent Scotland s future

By The National and Believe in Scotland open minds Scotland only narrowly missed out on generating the equivalent of 100% of its electricity demand from renewables in 2020 RENEWABLE energy holds the key to powering Scotland’s future and our country is so richly blessed with prized natural resources that it is well-placed to become a key player in the sector. Unless, of course, our third North Sea bonanza in a row is mishandled by Westminster as our oil and gas and fishing sectors have been. Scotland only narrowly missed out on generating the equivalent of 100% of its electricity demand from renewables in 2020. The latest figures show it reached 97.4% from renewable sources. That’s a huge stride forward in just a decade. When this target was set in 2011 renewable technologies generated just 37% of national demand.
