Women s Weekend Watch: NCAA First & Second Round Preview, Part I

Thursday May 13th, 2021 10:00am (Photo Courtesy: Dave Anderson)  We made it! After months of wondering whether the 2021 season would even happen, the powers that be figured it out. The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness.  Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. And the bracket isn’t without controversy (Duke at No. 7? No Penn State?). But that’s all pundit-speak. Over the next three weekends, teams will settle scores between the lines. Here’s (half of) what to watch for this weekend.

Friday Wrap: Wurzburger Shines as North Carolina Outlasts Duke 12-11

Fri Apr 23 2021 | Kenny DeJohn | College PHOTO BY JEFFREY A. CAMARATI / UNC ATHLETICS With Jamie Ortega sidelined, the top-ranked North Carolina women’s lacrosse team needed a lights-out scorer to fill the void. The Tar Heels aren’t short on stars, and luckily for head coach Jenny Levy, she had an up-and-coming playmaker waiting in the wings. Caitlyn Wurzburger, arguably the most hyped freshman in women’s lacrosse history, had five goals on seven shots with one assist as North Carolina staved off a furious second-half comeback from Duke in a 12-11 win at Koskinen Stadium. Katie Hoeg had one goal and five assists, and Ally Mastroianni had three goals including the game-winning tally with 17 seconds remaining.
