This weekend finally showcased the game that we had been waiting for all season long North Carolina versus Syracuse. And believe me, it did not disappoint. Early on, Syracuse looked to be in control, as it was able to dominate the draw circle and work its classic weave offense perfectly. The Orange started 4-for-4 in shooting and were able to create chaos on the defensive end with their patented high-pressure backer. About five minutes into the game, it looked like the Orange had the Heels on their heels (sorry, I had to!).

Enthusiasm for this matchup had been building for weeks as both teams rolled through their respective schedules, establishing themselves as the two best teams in the country. On Saturday, North Carolina showed everyone that there’s a gap between one and two. A sizable one. This UNC team is a super-team. No one’s gotten closer than six goals to them this season. No one’s scored more than nine goals against them. On Saturday, SU didn’t do either.

The unquestioned No. 1 team in the nation reinforced its standing atop the Nike / US Lacrosse Magazine Division I Women’s Top 20, dismantling No. 2 Syracuse 17-6 at UNC’s Dorrance Field. The Tar Heels are now 11-0. The first 10 minutes of play were hardly indicative of how the game would turn out. Syracuse (6-1, 4-1 ACC) were connecting from everywhere. After Meaghan Tyrrell and Scottie Rose Growney traded goals to begin the contest, Sam Swart, Megan Carney and Tyrrell each scored in a three-goal run that resulted in a 4-1 lead for the Orange.
