SOCSD delays student start date to Aug 24

SOCSD delays student start date to Aug. 24 Peasant Classes will start Aug. 24 in the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District, Superintendent Eddie Peasant announced Friday, instead of Aug. 6 as originally planned, in order to prepare teachers for an unexpectedly high number of students who will learn through the district’s virtual option. The district had 2,000 students signed up for virtual learning before July 21 and has received more than 1,000 more requests since then from parents wanting to switch their children to that model, Peasant said in a press release. This adds up to more than 40 percent of students in virtual learning environments, and the district had only been prepared to accommodate 25 percent, he said.

A heart for youth: Starkville group seeks to reduce violence, offer experiences to young people By Amelia Plair/Special to The Dispatch • 1 day ago Brody Rice answers questions from the audience after giving a presentation on a trip he took to the Memphis Zoo this summer. Rice was one of 20 Armstrong Jr. High students who went on the trip free of charge thanks to the leadership of SRO officer Sammy Shumaker and the Starkville Community Action and Advocacy Association. Amelia Plair/Special to The Dispatch “We need three things: partnership, relationship, and fellowship.” Brody Rice’s words rang out with the cadence and conviction of an experienced minister at a recent Starkville Community Action and Advocacy meeting. His ready smile and neat khakis topped with a tucked-in shirt and sport coat completed the effect.
