(KNSI) – Around a dozen groups signed a community policing agreement with Stearns County to help protect the area’s immigrant community.
Fe y Justicia (faith and justice) organizer Patty Keeling helped spearhead the agreement, but there is still more work to do.
“I hope it creates more talk whenever there are issues. I think with other organizations, maybe not so much, but perhaps they will come forward now. I’m a little disappointed that our Somali community didn’t come. I know that they had planned on it. They needed to be a part of this along with our black community. And that we, we still need to pull them into this.”
Stearns Co. Sheriff, Residents to Sign Policing Agreement
Spokeswoman
Sheriff Steve Soyka was elected.
She says it is believed this is the first agreement of its type in any county in Minnesota and is based largely on the city of St. Cloud s Community Policing Agreement that has been in place since 2005. She says the biggest difference is the jail piece of this new agreement since the city doesn t have a jail.
We were able to begin changing languages in things that the inmates had available to them so that they could understand their rights within the jail.
Soyka says a lot of the items covered in the agreement are things that his department is doing already.
