STCC Optics and Photonics Professor Wins Award for Leadership 460 SPRINGFIELD A Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) professor of Optics and Photonics Technology has joined 16 recipients from institutions worldwide in receiving awards and medals from the Optical Society (OSA). The 2021 OSA prizes include the Esther Hoffman Beller Medal, which went to Nicholas Massa. According to a news release from the OSA, Massa was recognized “for outstanding leadership in photonics technician education, including the development and dissemination of innovative educational materials.” Massa has taught at STCC since 1986, and has led the Optics and Photonics program since 1990. “It’s an honor and privilege to be recognized by the OSA and be part of an esteemed group of colleagues dedicated to advancing the field of optics and photonics,” Massa said. “I’m proud to have helped prepare and inspire students to pursue careers in a rewarding and exciting field.”

The Greens, of Ware, are creators and owners of Jay’s Wicked Gourmet Sauce. Their company produces and markets over six different varieties of small batch gourmet barbecue and hot sauces. Ingredients are locally sourced, and they happily omit gluten ingredients and preservatives. All of their products’ packaging is sustainable. “What makes our family business a success is that we both have separate sets of strengths and weaknesses,” Shannon Green says. “We make a really great team.”

STCC Dental Hygiene Clinic to offer free treatment for 2 months

by afampov · February 16, 2021 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield Technical Community College’s Dental Hygiene Clinic will offer free preventative treatment for children and adults in February and March. The clinic on the campus of STCC usually charges a nominal fee for services, but the college decided to waive fees for two months to help the community, many of whom are facing financial hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic. The clinic, which is open Monday through Friday, is now accepting appointments starting at 8 a.m. The clinic closes at 4 p.m. “The service at the clinic includes scaling and prophylaxis (teeth cleaning), any needed X-rays, fluoride treatments, as well as dental sealants for children which can run from $30 to $60 per tooth in the outside sector,” said Meg Loadholt, the Dental Hygiene program coordinator.
