It’s easier than ever to get a COVID-19 vaccine. Berrien County Health Department Communications Manager Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News the county has close to 45% of its population with at least one dose of vaccine, and appointments at vaccine clinics are not filling up nearly as quickly as they were in at the start of the rollout.
“The time of the mass vaccination clinic where thousands of people are coming through in a single day might be over,” Conrad said. “We might be moving more toward smaller clinics, more community settings, workplace settings, schools even.”
Conrad says now is the time to get yourself a shot if you want to but haven’t.

Berrien County’s COVID-19 rates are currently about double what they were a month ago as the effort to get vaccines distributed continues. During a Wednesday update, Berrien County Health Officer Nicki Britten said a silver lining is that the rate is still lower than it was last fall. She also noted most of the new cases are with younger patient as the older population gets vaccinated. As for the governor’s request that schools voluntarily close, Britten said schools are relatively safe and not where most COVID cases originate. Spectrum Health Lakeland CEO Loren Hamel talked about hospitalizations.
