BENGALURU: India s smartphone sales set a record for the January-to-March quarter this year, but a massive second wave of COVID-19 infections will hit future sales in the world s No.2 smartphone market, a research report showed on Monday.
Indians bought more smartphones during the period due to pent up demand after a pandemic-ravaged 2020, sending phone shipments up 23% year-over-year to more than 38 million units, the best sales for any first quarter, research firm Counterpoint said.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Xiaomi led the market in Q1 2021 with a 26% shipment share accounting for five out of the top 10 smartphone models.
Samsung was second, logging the highest growth at 52% and a 20% share, up from 16% last year.
OnePlus led 5G smartphone shipments with 33% share. Chinese brands together accounted for 75% share in the quarter.

The percentage of school students who own a smartphone in rural India increased from 36% to 61% in the last two years, as per Economic Survey of India 2020-21. It also noted that the digital divide is likely to reduce educational inequalities in the country.
The Survey which was tabled during the 17th Lok Sabha session on Friday said, Access to data network, electronic devices such as a computer, laptop, smartphone, etc. gained importance due to distance learning and remote working.. Percentage of enrolled children from government and private schools owning a smartphone increased enormously from 36.5 pc in 2018 to 61.8 pc in 2020 in rural India.
