Planned Parenthood began that reckoning last year when it removed Sanger s name from one of its New York City clinics. Now it is taking further steps. We have defended Sanger as a protector of bodily autonomy and self-determination, while excusing her association with white supremacist groups and eugenics as an unfortunate product of her time, Johnson wrote. For decades, foes of birth control and abortion have attacked Sanger (1879-1966) as a racist.
