Adam Patterson and Fay Spanswick were twice caught on camera inflicting the cruel training methods on the young colt, who was called Fred, in Burbage last April. The former couple, now aged 23 and 22 respectively, were sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment suspended for 18 months at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Sentencing the pair, chairman of the bench Deborah Couzens said: “As far as we are concerned this offence is serious enough for custody. It goes beyond appropriate training and ignorance to outright violence towards this pony.”

Police arrested Lucy Higgins after the collision on Dixon Way in Westlea which happened at around 3.20pm on Thursday. They charged the 35-year-old, who lives on the street, with driving a motor vehicle when over the alcohol limit, driving a motor vehicle without with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance. She has been refused bail and will appear before Swindon Magistrates’ Court this afternoon
