Last fall, it seemed that the worst was over for Tanya Ortiz.
Her landlord had filed to evict her from her Jersey City apartment over the summer, but because of the state’s eviction moratorium, she would not be forced to leave. After spending a few months without work, she had resumed her job as a mail carrier. And she had just learned that a county-administered grant of CARES Act funding would cover much of her back rent.
Kearny man receives $1.1 million settlement in motorcycle crash lawsuit: report

A Kearny motorcyclist who was seriously injured in a crash in 2019 has received more than $1 million in a settlement, New Jersey Law Journal reported.
The $1.1. million settlement, reached last month, was the result of a lawsuit filed in Hudson County Superior Court in July 2019, a month after the crash. The lawsuit said Kelvin Perez, now 25, was riding his motorcycle north on the Route 17 loop in Lyndhurst on June 23, 2019 when Cesar Mejia of North Bergen, “carelessly” struck him.
As a result of the crash, Perez “was severely and permanently injured; has been caused and in the future will be caused great pain and suffering; . has been disabled and will in the future to continue to be disabled,” the lawsuit said.

U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo sentenced Jamel Armfield, 20, of Jersey City, previously convicted of three felonies, to 60 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition in connection with a June 2020 Jersey City shooting.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Armfield previously pleaded guilty by videoconference before Arleo to an indictment charging him with one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
On June 24, 2020, Armfield fired nine rounds of ammunition at a moving vehicle on Gates Avenue in Jersey City from a .45 caliber Springfield Armory semi-automatic handgun, Model XD-45 ACP. He also had in his possession several rounds .45 caliber ammunition.
