Big Island adds 13 new COVID for 1803 total; state adds 204

December 20, 2020 at 12:42 pm Today, the State Department of Health confirmed 204 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, bringing the total number to 20,217 The Big Island has 13 new cases, bringing the island’s total to 1,803. The island has had 50 deaths from COVID-19 out of the state’s 282 total deaths attributed to COVID-19.  Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that 4 people are hospitalized.  On Friday, Hilo Medical Center reported 2 patients with COVID-19 in the ICU.  Yesterday at 5:10 p.m., Kona Community Hospital reported no patients with COVID-19 in the hospital.   North Hawaii Community Hospital does not provide a report. There are now two FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines, one by Pfizer/BioNTech and one by Moderna.  The State is receiving both, and has a priority list for how vaccines will be distributed.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Halemaumau Crater eruption seemed to come out of nowhere, surprising Hawaii Island residents and even experts on Sunday night. Kilauea has been in a period of “non-eruptive unrest” since its 2018 eruption ended. That eruption in the lower East Rift Zone destroyed hundreds of homes and leveled entire communities. The eruption Sunday, however, is within the crater and authorities say at this time there is no threat to communities in the lower East Rift Zone.

Kīlauea Volcano erupts on Island of Hawai i

An eruption around 9:30 p.m. HST (11:30 p.m. B.C. time) on December 20 at Kīlauea Volcano’s Halema’uma’u Crater in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park sent up plumes of smoke and lit up the night sky. As previously reported, the U.S. Geological Survey had recorded a 4.3-magnitude earthquake at 10:36 p.m. on December 20, Honolulu time (12:36 a.m. on December 21 B.C. time) on the island of Hawai’i. The epicentre was located beneath Kīlauea Volcano s south flank, and shaking was reported across the island.
