Before I get going on the meat and potatoes of this article, let me say this:
None of my views on this matter are a direct shot at the work or character of interim GM Bill Schmidt or any other current Rockies employee who might be in consideration for the job at the end of the 2021 season.
Now that we have that out of the way, I can get to the thesis of this piece.
The Rockies absolutely need their next general manager to come from outside the organization.
This sentiment is not new or an original thought I’ve conjured up. The consensus in the Rockies universe is that owner Dick Monfort and new team president Greg Feasel will do just that. While it’s very possible Schmidt performs adequately in his time in the role, and he certainly has “aspirations of having the job full time,” the team can’t afford to hire a long-term member from within the organization to take on the colossal job ahead.

A heap of 11 runs through the first three innings led the Richmond Flying Squirrels to a 12-6 victory against the Hartford Yard Goats at The Diamond Thursday night.
In the second inning, Sean Hjelle chopped a two-run single to center field in his first professional plate appearance to open the scoring against Hartford starter Will Gaddis (Loss, 0-1).
“A big part of the reason why we’re able to get back to the ballpark is the number of fans getting vaccinations. Like baseball, it’s a numbers game and we want to continue to be part of the solution,” said Hartford Yard Goats president Tim Restall.
The hope is for this to be a home run towards herd immunity.
“There is an opportunity from a spontaneity standpoint that when people show up here they’re feeling good where going to make it as easy as possible to walk around the corner and get the vaccine,” said Jeffrey Flaks, president & CEO of Hartford HealthCare.

Ryan Howard picked up three hits and drove in a pair, including the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, as the Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Hartford Yard Goats, 6-4, on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
The Flying Squirrels (1-1) collected 14 hits on the night to even the season-opening series with the Yard Goats (1-1).
With the game tied, 4-4, in the bottom of the eighth, Howard drove an RBI double off of Yoan Aybar (Loss, 0-1) to put the Flying Squirrels ahead. Kyle Mottice followed with a squeeze bunt single to push the lead to 6-4.
