Five students from the Howard Payne University School of Nursing are prepared to become the first graduates from the university’s nursing program. The first graduating class includes Adrien Barrientos of Lewisville; Hanna Crow of Brownwood; Josie McClung of Brownwood; Ashley Strong of Brownwood; and Kira Teel of San Antonio.
The students will be presented with their degrees at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, during the second of HPU’s two Commencement ceremonies that day, both of which will be held in Mims Auditorium.
“I’ve seen growth in the self-confidence of this group,” said Dr. Nina Ouimette, dean of the School of Nursing. “I’ve also seen them grow in what they thought the role of a nurse was, to now, understanding what the professional role is.”

The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Wednesday afternoon:
On Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at approximately 5:45 p.m. officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1600 block of 1
st Street regarding a suspicious person. The address is known to officers due to repeated calls from the resident – 50-year-old Robert Calbert Walker. On this occasion, a neighbor phoned police stating that Walker was on his front porch covered in blood.
Officer Zachary Davis and other officers arrived and located Walker lying on his front porch holding a puppy. It appeared that Walker had dumped his trash can onto the porch and chose to sit in the waste. Officer Davis also observed an obvious open wound to Walker’s forehead and other lacerations to his face. Walker refused to believe that the officers were real and would crawl away from them when they got closer to his porch. Walker was continually yelling and cursing and appeared to be under the influence of an illegal subs
A one vehicle accident on Highway 279 and County Road 102, north of Brownwood, seriously injured the Lake Brownwood Bridge Fire Department Chief.
Thursday afternoon, Lake Brownwood Bridge Chief Randy Feight was seriously injured while responding in a fire department vehicle to an oilfield tank battery fire during the afternoon storm.
According to Darrell Johnston, Brown County Emergency Management Coordinator, Chief Feight was taken to Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood and was then transferred to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene for further treatment.
According to a statement on the Lake Brownwood Bridge VFD Facebook page late Thursday night: “Chief suffered several injuries but is currently listed in stable condition at Hendricks in Abilene.”
