(WECT) - New Hanover County leaders are reporting a surge of vandalism in parks across the region. Three different incidents have been reported at both Ogden Park and Long Leaf Park in the last month. Park leaders believe the three incidents could be connected. Even on a chilly winter morning, the playground at Long Leaf Park is nonstop activity. Nella Dement visits the park a lot with her 8-year-old son. Heading to the park quickly became an important part of their routine during the pandemic.

New Hanover band teacher charged in student sexual assault cases

On Jan. 24, Roland-Grise Middle School band teacher Peter Michael Frank became the third New Hanover County Schools employee to be arrested on charges of sexual misconduct involving a student since 2018. Frank, 47, has since been charged with nearly 30 felony counts for crimes that allegedly took place between 1999 and 2019.  The search warrant issued three days after Frank’s arrest allowed law enforcement to obtain his personnel file, which revealed he had been repeatedly counseled by New Hanover County Schools for “inappropriate relationships” with students. It further stated that Frank allegedly told law enforcement he was attracted to middle-school-aged girls. Searches of his phone and computers allegedly turned up photos of the “clothed-backsides of female students.”

(WECT) - A 21-year-old woman is charged in a hit and run crash that left a New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputy injured. According to Highway Patrol Sgt. Brandon Long, Maggie Amdur is charged with felony hit and run resulting in serious bodily injury and fail to move over resulting in serious bodily injury. Amdur was given a $250,000 bond. The crash happened on Friday, December 4 around 9 p.m.

Woman charged with hit and run in New Hanover County

A 21-year-old woman has been charged in a hit and run incident that left a deputy from the New Hanover County Sheriff s Office injured.  Maggie Grace Amdur was arrested and charged with felony hit and run resulting in serious bodily injury and failure to move over resulting in serious bodily harm, according to a press release from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. On Friday Dec. 4 around 9:04 p.m., Sgt. R.O. Mills was conducting a vehicle stop on U.S. 421 near Golden Road. When concluding the stop, a dark-colored SUV failed to move over and struck Mills as it passed by, according to the release. The vehicle then fled the scene of the collision.
