Detailed description is Applied Global Citizenship (AGC) is a program offering activities beyond the conventional curriculum, such as the opportunity to learn about important international issues outside the classroom and beyond the islands Applied Global Citizenship (AGC) broadens students’s global awareness and understanding of international affairs, and creates lifelong love of learning and discovery.
Students experience skills that are seldom taught in school; public speaking, debate, presentation of ideas, thinking on their feet, research, and complex writing.
This program is a great opportunity for students to learn more about their world in an exciting and competitive way, and opens up doors for the students involved.
All of our students applied the skills learned in AGC to activities outside of school.
Two students received scholarships to study foreign languages abroad over the summer through the US State Department’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth program, and traveled to Morocco and China.
Alumni of the program won substantial scholarships to pay for college through their involvement in AGC.
Last school year, the program introduced a new Advanced Placement class to Kealakehe, AP Comparative Government and Politics.
The class averaged a 3.4 on the AP exam, and boasts a 74% pass rate, well above both state and national averages.

There are three interconnected programs within AGC: Model United Nations, Speech and Debate, and Academic World Quest.
Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the real United Nations, where students are assigned a country to represent, then become a diplomat for that country.
They research a topic then defend their country’s position in different UN committees.
Since 2011, MUN took students to San Francisco and twice to New York for MUN conferences.
Our MUN team won the Outstanding Conference Preparation and Research Award last December at the Regional High School MUN (RHSMUN) Conference.
Speech and Debate is comprised of written and oral components, where students debate assigned topics and participate in tournaments across the state.
The 2012 Kealakehe Debate team placed Top 16 in the world in the International Public Policy Forum Competition and qualified students to the Hawaii State Speech and Debate Tournament.
Academic World Quest is a trivia competition where students research specific issues and compete against other high school students from across the state, and eventually the nation! For the last two years, the team won both the Big Island and public school state championship finishing behind Punahou last year for the state championship.
This year, we aim for first place in the state, a prize that is accompanied by an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C, where teams from across the nation compete.
