Der Forschungsansatz des „Reallabors Spacesharing" setzt sich intensiv mit dem Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit auseinander, der eng mit dem Ressourcenbedarf einer Gesellschaft und damit mit der Ressourceneffizienz verbunden ist.
Die Entwicklung der letzten Jahrzehnte zeigt, dass in städtischen Wachstumsregionen wie Stuttgart die umbauten Volumen und Nutzflächen zunehmen, während die Nutzungsdichte sinkt.
Ziel des Projektvorhabens ist es, Raumnutzungen des Gebäudebestands mit dem bestehenden Bedarf heterogener Akteure räumlich zu kombinieren und somit die Nutzungseffizienz von Gebäuden im städtischen Kontext zu steigern..

Das Projekt wird an der ABK Stuttgart inter- und transdisziplinär durchgeführt und findet in Zusammenarbeit mit einer Vielzahl an Kooperationspartnern – unter anderem der Stadt Stuttgart, der Vermögen und Bau Baden-Württemberg und der Dualen Hochschule Baden-Württemberg Stuttgart – statt.
Die Lehre wird mit Praxisbezug umgesetzt, neue Lehrformate und Methoden werden entwickelt, und innovative Ansätze können umfassend erprobt werden und finden schneller ihren Weg in die Praxis.Durch die Verbindung von wissenschaftlicher Grundlagenforschung an der Hochschule und Realexperimenten in der Stadt werden Erneuerung und Innovation langfristig wirksam in Stadtentwicklung integriert..
