Author: Mike Gooding Updated: 6:43 PM EDT July 22, 2021 WASHINGTON — The Senate Armed Services Committee has finished marking up the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act. U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) is calling it "a significant win." The committee has approved $24 billion for shipbuilding. That's $2 billion more than what the Biden Administration sought. The measure would allow full funding to build two Virginia-class submarines, two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, one Constellation-class Frigate and Expeditionary Fast Transport, and other support ships. Additionally, the Senate version of the act provides $12.5 billion for ship repair and ship maintenance at public and private ship repair yards. Overall, Senators increased the defense bill budget by a total of $25 billion.
