The first is soaring and elated; the second is sombre and determinedly serious. It is as though Sibelius couldnât quite decide which to end with so used both. Right up to the closing pages, it looks as though the sombre theme will win the day, providing a grim ending to a work that started with such gentle bucolic charm. But, as though he knew what we were thinking, Sibelius turns it around right at the last moment, not with a triumphant restatement but just a hint of the first idea before closing in exultant intensity.
