(Don Treeger / The Republican) Facebook Share BECKET — Twenty years ago a grassroots conservation group bought the historic Becket Quarry property so it wouldn’t be reopened to provide crushed stone for the Big Dig. The volunteer Becket Land Trust raised $300,000 to make the purchase. In the decades since, President Ken Smith says, the group has received another $250,000 in state and private grants, built 7 miles of hiking trails, established a 40-acre habitat for the New England Cottontail, and created a 20-acre forest preserve for healthy oak trees beloved by wildlife.
