Financial outreach has goal of preserving Becket quarry/forest recreation area


As of Friday, the GoFundMe campaign had raised just over $5,800 of its $100,000 target.
The 120-member land trust, formed in 1991, bought the forested quarry in 1999 for $300,000. The preservationists jumped in to keep a company from buying the quarry and excavating millions of cubic yards of granite for Boston’s $8 billion Central Artery/Tunnel project, infamously known as the Big Dig.
Since the purchase, the land trust has developed 10 trails of varying difficulty, the main trail off Quarry Road going from a parking area directly to the quarry. Smith noted that, in recent years, the Appalachian Mountain Club has helped expand the trail system. ....

BECKET Twenty years ago a grassroots conservation group bought the historic Becket Quarry property so it wouldn’t be reopened to provide crushed stone for the Big Dig.
The volunteer Becket Land Trust raised $300,000 to make the purchase. In the decades since, President Ken Smith says, the group has received another $250,000 in state and private grants, built 7 miles of hiking trails, established a 40-acre habitat for the New England Cottontail, and created a 20-acre forest preserve for healthy oak trees beloved by wildlife. ....
