Council plans to borrow £4.7m for new M5 traffic easing scheme

A SOMERSET council intends to borrow up to £4.7m for a new “throughabout” which will unlock new housing and ease traffic between Bridgwater and the M5.
Sedgemoor District Council is seeking to make improvements to the Dunball roundabout near junction 23, in order to bring forward more than 1,300 homes in the Bridgwater area and deliver new employment sites.
After a failed bid to the government’s housing infrastructure fund (HIF), the council has decided to push forward by borrowing the money itself, paying it back through contributions from future developments.
The project will take inspiration from the Yeovil western corridor improvements, with the entire roundabout being re-designed as a “throughabout” complete with traffic lights.
