An ordinance to appropriate a $10,000 grant from the National Center for State Courts was introduced to City Council on March 10. It will be considered on an emergency basis, allowing a one-cycle process toward the final vote. The money will be used by the 4th Judicial Circuit for a “Proof of Concept” project that is studying remote jury selection. The court will purchase loaner laptop computers and temporary internet access for people who don’t have the equipment in their homes to be able to serve as a juror. “Jurors won’t be excused for not having the technology,” said Circuit Judge Bruce Anderson.
