A former bus driver for the Lansing, Michigan, public school district is continuing to make drop-offs, but with different, quieter cargo. Named after the area code of the founding partners’ homes, 517 Coffee Company is now delivering fresh-roasted coffee throughout the area. James and Amanda Dufrees and Jamie and Rebecca Ladronka, friends and neighbors from the same Lansing neighborhood, run the coffee company. After starting with a Behmor home roaster in the Dufrees’ basement, the business now leans on a Mill City Roasters machine inside a shop formerly occupied by the bakery Bake N’ Cakes on the city’s south side.
