Network energy saving has never been so important, with climate change one of the most pressing challenges of our era, says Tang Xue of ZTE.
In an article recently published in Developing Telecoms' new special report on Leveraging the Benefits of 5G in Emerging Markets, Tang discusses the role the mobile sector must play in reducing energy use, both because of its scale and its capability to make significant reductions. According to Tang, 5G is becoming the most critical technology for two major reasons: firstly, the introduction of 5G into the networks with 2G, 3G and 4G, brings more power consumption; second, although 5G can provide faster services, its energy efficiency is not always optimal - especially at the initial stage of deployment and with low traffic.
