A timeline of coronavirus in Winchester and Hampshire

The first two cases in the Winchester district were reported on the same day – March 6.
Figures by Public Health England show that by April 1, less than a month later more than 100 cases had been recorded in the district.
Today, the cumulative figure stands at nearly 5,000.
The first person who died within 28 days of positive Covid test in the district was pronounced dead on March 22.
This total now stands at more than 180.
Steve Brine MP said: “I think we’d all happily never hear the word covid again let alone pandemic but this is not done yet. It’s been an awful year, most of all for those who’ve lost people of course. My fear is there’s still as much to come - in terms of economic fallout and mental health in particular - as has already passed. As I said in the House this week, we’re so far ahead locally in the vaccination programme which is the only way out of this. Ministers took a big gamble on the vaccination task force and its really paid off for the UK; they deserve great credit for that.
