The November, 2018 shooting at a Jefferson County sheriffâs deputy moved closer to resolution on Monday with sentencing of the second of three men charged. Kolby D. Schmidt of Helena was sentenced Monday in the Jefferson County Fifth Judicial District Court to five years in prison, less time served, and a $500 fine for one count of criminal endangerment. Judge Ray Dayton of the Third District Court followed the recommendation of the Stateâs attorney following Schmidtâs plea agreement last February. Per the agreement, Schmidtâs sentence will run concurrently with a 10-year term in Idaho for drug trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm and with a sentence for unrelated charges in Lewis and Clark County.
