Additional capacity for mental health treatment comes at critical time (Editorial) Today 6:48 AM The pandemic has cast a wide and troubling net related to our physical and mental health. It’s hardly surprising Researchers from the National Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that recent symptoms of anxiety and depression rose during the pandemic, notably between August 2020 and February 2021. Our region is slowly but surely building up resources to make behavioral health treatment more accessible to residents. After Providence Behavioral Health Hospital, part of Trinity Health of New England, ended inpatient psychiatric services at its 74-bed facility in June, the situation for Western Massachusetts residents seeking care looked dire. The closing worsened an already chronic shortage of beds in the region. In February, Health Partners of New England announced it had purchased Providence and would rename the facility MiraVista with plans to open 36 beds by the end of April.
