In a new development, the college and the charity have now created standalone guidance tailored to the care of patients living in care homes who are coming to the end of their lives. It has been designed to help general practice care for people in care homes and also support homes to provide the best possible care for their residents. Nurse leaders welcoming the standards said they hoped it will allow nursing staff to “see ways to innovate the care they give to benefit all service users”. The guidance, which has been co-developed with frontline GPs, members of the multi-disciplinary practice team and other relevant care providers, was already in development before the pandemic and their use is not limited to the care of patients during Covid-19.
