Alabama has $1B in unclaimed property; see if any is yours Updated Feb 02, 2021; Today is National Unclaimed Property Day, and Alabama’s state treasurer wants people to check its list for lost or forgotten property and money. State Treasurer John McMillian’s office has more than $1 billion in unclaimed property, according to a press release. That includes cash, stock, bonds, insurance benefits and “even valuables from safe deposti boxes. The assets are turned over the the state each year by businesses, banks and other financial institutions that lose contact with the owners. “Our office diligently works to identify, notify and pay the owners of these properties as simply and quickly as possible,” McMillan said. “Our work is even more important now, during the pandemic and economic hardships when every penny counts.”
