Alaska's wheels of justice need tending to, as well as the nation's

As the nation and the world waited on Tuesday for a verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former officer charged with murder in George Floyd's death, awareness is higher than ever about racial inequities in the nation's justice system.
While the guilty verdicts may be seen as a win for equality and a step forward for the nation, there is still much work to be done. Each week, new cases of apparent misuse of power by authorities entrusted to protect all citizens in the nation emerge. Far too many of them involve members of minority populations.
A little closer to home, many Alaskans know this pain all too well. This week, a Bethel woman finally saw action 110 days after she reported she was sexually assaulted. She said it took Bethel police 34 days to pick up her sexual assault kit, and another two months to arrest the alleged rapist.
