ALJAZ The Stream 2017 Ep 197 December 12, 2017

Rouhani made those comments during a speech in parliament on sunday tehran and riyadh severed diplomatic relations in january of last year after iranian protesters attacked a Saudi Diplomatic Mission demonstrations were angry over the killing of a prominent shia cleric in this raid. Up next its the stream i will see you very very soon. Facing realities if a piece of machinery goes wrong if there are trying all of this to creation true which we can bring the legal system to getting to the heart of the matter i dont see the need of the thought that some of my producers hear their story on talk to which is it at this time. For me ok and your industry today should u. S. President donald trump be actively resisted i guess today has been a vocal part of that movement for more than a year now you may not know his name but its likely that you know its work today meet Michael Skolnik and imo they could be large enough to be bringing the questions from our community to my god keep them coming with hash tag a. J. Stream and you can also send them to me via you tube. When us President Donald Trump was on the Campaign Trial he promised his make America Great again slogan was more than just words it was a movement that would sweep him into the white house but his election also birthed another movement one of resistance to him and all that his presidency stands for on the streets and. One of the loudest voices of that resistance has been Michael Skolnik and there hasnt been much that he hasnt commented on his busy twitter feed is filled with support for black lives matter women and the womens march on emigrants and thats just in the past few months theres also been extensive commentary on trump his government and his actions skolnick activism has been noticed by trump himself he was blocked by the u. S. President in september Michael Skolnik c. E. O. And cofounder of the says agency joins us now from new york and joining their questions about the. Doctor recipient and Communications Director for the engraved on campus org. And jimmy adams is a digital organizer michael for some of our International Audience who might not be that familiar with if you will you know what theres a story i would love for you to tell you a youngster it involves hailing a taxi in new york pick up the story from there it kind of shows how you grew up what motivates you in this world can you tell the taxi story. Yeah well im looking at those tweets like. The greatest hits of of. How much of her anger and frustration would not trump. Thank you for her well i didnt never look at seventy one of those moments when i was a teenager and living in the york growing up i had a moment of awakening if you will was with a friend of mine who was another teenager late one night after a party coming out of central park and this is in the mid nineties looking for a taxi cab to go home and ill never forget omar green you know putting his hand out to get a taxi i was fourteen years old almost nineteen and watching taxi as a taxi of a taxi going by finally a taxi you know i stopped and i put my hand out to help my friend and the taxi stopped for omar and omar so you got in a cab and you know in great disgust having gone through that im sure hundreds of times in his lifetime for the first time for me as a fourteen year old seeing firsthand the difference of treatment between two friends of a different skin color i walked home that night at fourteen years old not knowing what the words meant youre not knowing what White Privilege or antiracism any of these things that have become part of my life my lifes work but to me knowing that that that i had something that he didnt have now is treated differently because of that that was a moment of awakening for me to a very young age and and ever since twenty five years later im a im a older man now ive been doing the work what do you tell people that you do michael and people. Michael scott well what do you what do you tell them im you know i tweet a lot but. I do what i view i have the great privilege of working in a company that im one of the cofounders of course so the agency thats the Creative Agency doing social impact campaigns its a workers on cooperative im giving. Company a wage the workers of the course of eight years and i have the great pleasure of creating campaigns and working with incredible you know people around this country around the world to try to deliver compassion and try to uplift authenticity and create. So you mentioned you tweet a lot im going to dip right into there and one of the things you tweeted about not too long ago this is just embraced and this is a troubling story for many people in our community and those watching morning a graphic he tweeted this is a murder and what youre referring to is this incident this is from the New York Times this headline video shows Daniel Shaver who is a white man pleading for his life before being shot by officer this happened in two thousand and sixteen and the dash body video was recently released heres what people online are saying about it to men says for those who dont know black lives matter is fighting for Daniel Shaffer and an armed white man killed by a white cop another person goes on to say over and over i see black folks who advocate black lives matter being just as vocal when white folks like Daniel Shaver are killed by police its white people whose advocacy less often crosses racial lines hence the hash tag so some heated and pointed comments there michael but what do you make of that what do you make of White Privilege and what it has to do with things like black lives matter which youre pretty vocal about. Yeah a proud supporter of black lives Matter Movement as an ally as a white person. In the great disparities of Police Violence against communities of color versus White Communities but sir in this case we saw a horrible abuse of power by a Police Officer killing a white man in this really really horrible video and here you are playing you know shaun king who is one of the great leaders of black eyes Matter Movement was to want to really sort of three hundred seventy thousand read tweets was want to address this video to light to many people but certainly we see police abuse happening all across this country we know what happens way more in black communities when it happens anybody we should call injustice what it is this is murder in my opinion it is it is ugly it is nasty i feel terrible for this family and certainly want to make sure we uplift the life of being shaver because he did not deserve to die at the hands of the police i want to show our audience some of you what some of the what the two either the amplification all maybe getting very big names to come over to your idea of what social justice is and use some of that celebrity to see that heres a look one james and carry in the next place where i come before the cascade i cant believe you may remember is one of the last things that are gonna set before he was strangled and then we have here i am an immigrant share your story as one campaign that you are actually amplifying to me as a digital organizer what is it to you want to ask michael. Sure is so i know michel that you said that we need everyone in this movement we need tweeters we need funders we need protesters talk about what folks you think need to do in this age of trouble in this age of resistance to continue to be in a good compliment to continue being a good sister against this whole entire. Grievance. You know we were jimmy a thank you and. So appreciate your work as well so thank you for joining us. You know i weirdly have known donald trump on and off for many many years because of my previous relationship and the business that i ran with Russell Simmons and donald and russell were friends and donald actually wrote the forward to russells first two books many many years ago and so i got a chance to be around donald over the years and and this man is as vicious as nasty as a sexist massage mystic race to come home a fabric behind the scenes as he is and as a u. S. President and so what i see happening during this time is that donald in his own you know National Security adviser h. R. Mcmaster not the one whos been indicted but the new one in his own language called him in the eyes of the intelligence of a kindergartener his own secretary of state i said hes an effing idiot this man is an intelligence level an understanding of the issues is very very poor but what he does know is he doesnt know how to build a brand and doesnt know how to start and fight a culture war and that is what donald trump is doing when he attacks Football Players only attacks the media when here attacks jamelle hill when attacks Federico Wilson there is no a coincidence he consistently attacks black people as he attacked them again no question why not eminem as white but he will happily attack on and capture nic so as as folks who are part of the resistance as folks will culture makers who artists who have platforms we have to consistently push back from a cultural level not just from a policy level but from a cultural level is that so the meat to movement as an example is a incredibly Inspiring Movement led by culture led by women who said enough is enough inspired by the womens march to see a man show vicious and so nasty against women to say if we cant be true in the polls were going to speak out loudly about Sexual Assault and harassment and you to donald trump have been accused by nineteen women of Sexual Assault and harassment and we will make sure the world knows that. Let me just let me just say this again michel you tweeted this out a little while ago thirteen women have accused trump a Sexual Harassment i hate guess ill just give me a moment and then you list them at the f. Area and you say i believe them or rather than just the tough criticism you have of President Trump you actually have had one on one experiences with him tell us the one thats the most revealing for you well you know Russell Simmons and i want to go see him in two thousand and twelve when he was ramping up his birth or movement in this racist campaign against president obama and we sat in his office in two thousand and twelve with the mom from at that time the ninety six treat mosque here in new york city and a rabbi march ninth from a very prominent temple synagogue. It was the month and then sixty mosques and we begged him to stop with the birth or stuff and nonsense and the racism and he said to us you know that he really believed that obama was a muslim from kenya and that he should be the president and we are commanded out of that this is you should not say these things and he said no i really believe this and so in his mind you know donald trump you know really believe this you know so many of us who got us in the game we got to secure aids but i saw it many times with my own ears in my own eyes the racist comments the sexist comments the antisemitic comments this man is vicious hes nasty and hes dangerous. I think theres something that is. Why when i think thats the sound of people listening take out. Yes i think that it will were talking about systemic oppression and larger and that are injured locked with one another and i think that when you when you talk about me too as an example its not just led by women its led by survivors and i think that thats very important ive had times where Sexual Harassment and violence are. Are being denounced at every corner and we know this is not new rick coulter has been. Played for a very long time and the fight against racism is one that requires a critical understanding of gender and so i think it is because transgender woman of color being murdered in alarming numbers and thanks to the courage of survivors and Survivor Advocacy more people are going now perpetrators of Sexual Violence and so my question to you would be as a man and that producer what are your plans and upcoming productions to educate others the gender heterosexual white men underneath your gender justice so they can join the fight to make this country safer for gender and sexual minorities as well as harassment and rate for e. Catalina thank you and i do also want to say i one thing i think that you raised is also the need for those who are directly impacted to be supported to be leaders in the movement you as a doctor recipient certainly as someone who is an ally to the dreamers and to make sure we passed a dream act before the end of this year for december twenty second and knowing that it is critical that you and others who are dr mississippians are leading that movement as well we are supporting that in the same way as you mentioned survivors are leading this movement to me too when you speak of gender you know i speak about this a lot as a as a cyst gendered white male that we talking about the transgender that the murders of transgender women you know is the highest weve ever seen this twenty seven murders this year and two thousand and seventeen the highest weve ever seen a record of transgender people women specifically being murdered and we know transgender women of color are you more of a target so i think people have said oh and the translating a coalition i think they like you know i said oh of gender trower i havent seen a trace of the set who came out just recently against Jeffrey Tambor or on the set of transparent as one of the actors who is accusing him of sexually this Sexual Assault so i think as as as its just gender white male we have a tremendous. Reckoning to do amongst ourselves and i hold circles for men often mcgorry who is a good friend who doesnt have a tremendous amount of work on this issue have been i hold circle often for men have a lot of conversations of how we bring men into these conversations because we know that think about this so ive been thinking a lot if one in four women in america have been raped that means and lets say this is just a small percentage of those who that have been raped by serial rapist that means that one for a one in five a one in six for that matter men have committed. Ape and what are we doing about that ive got a four year old son i got a very very important conversation there out with my son as he grows up so its not just about me you know oftentimes we say oh we have daughters therefore we have to have these conversations no i have a son thats why i do this work if youre going to have them a conversation with my so how to respect and treat women at the very important because education and preventing the kind of rape culture that is so rampant and its been so grap and for since the beginning of this violent countrys history its important and it started home with many of us the undocumented and they are actually recipients are also woman and members of l. G. B. T. Q. Community and the transgender woman i need deported i could be facing a death sentence counseling for action for childhood arrivals and current efforts by the trumpet ministration to numbers of people how disproportionate of sex and the ability of any woman to be to q well think denouncing domestic biden and Sexual Harassment and rape for sure you are every now and producer and i want to ask him continue asking how do we break that Glass Ceiling and get boys like mind like sail and many other trans people into media i dont time where its not politically expedient and so what are you going to do to create a Cultural Church in your role as the burying our producer away from rape culture oh well i suppose the anti immigrant sentiments and policies that in my opinion are also anti servitor because i think that when i dont have the opportunity and the ability to reach out to learn forth men and make my big public the survivor that they are concerning yeah you know i. I appreciate your question and certainly respect your work how do you know and i think that. What ive learned over the course of my lifetime as ive gotten older and you know wake up in the morning and watch cartoons now and sort of watch the news in the world sun i realize that the better purpose for me in this world is to amplify and to make sure that the folks who are mostly directly impacted are centered in the work so we talk about you know i was just a retreat a few weeks ago with bambi and gina and trace talking about these issues and the day after we won home the retreat was a transgender day of remembrance for all those who have been killed and we made sure that folks who were not impacted by these issues were sharing it on social media were talking about it in the news media for going on television or going you know in front of the press so i think its important that we continue to center and uplift especially to a transgender women we know as our eyes that transgender women are a group of people that are right now are really getting it the worst and its important that we uplift those stories so even you being on this program today im humbled. That youre even in the sharing space with you and you having the chance to tell your story so i tried to give my time to you and and let you tell more of your story because if i hear from you more this year so michel and kathleen that speaking of sharing time i want to give a little bit of that time to our communities watching this live as it happens the show we asked the question what do you think it will take for a wider understanding and acceptance of me to stories similar to what you were asking catalina we got this answer goetia twitter says it will take a dismantling of white male privilege so part of that answer was seen by people who took to the streets in january of this year for the women smart and mia yo
