Watching the news hour live from our headquarters here in doha coming up in the next sixty minutes saudi arabia says it shot down a Ballistic Missile over its capital that fired from yemen by the rebels. Iran stands accused of supplying the who sees with weapons and tuesdays launch came only hours before the u. N. Security council met to discuss Irans Nuclear program. They signed up on a table. In the u. S. House republicans celebrate a sweeping tax reform bill and barely an hour later the senate tells them try again. And we mark a year in captivity for our colleague al jazeera journalist Mahmoud Hussein. The saudi Authorities Say theyve intercepted a Ballistic Missile targeting the capital riyadh its the third such attack since november who see fighters in yemen say they launched the missile targeting the royal palace King Solomons official residence they say the attack was to mark one thousand days since the start of the war in yemen it follows another launch on november the fourth when a missile was fired from yemen towards riyadhs king cully need International Airport and another missile targeting the city of qom this machine before it was intercepted on december the first phantom monahan has more. This is the moment the fire politike missile was apparently shot down by saudi forces the yemen based who piece a they were targeting the al your mama royal palace which is west of the capital riyadh was a large group of saudi leaders were meeting there at the time including king solomon and crown Prince Mohammed bin sama and i think they were these wanted to make a statement that theyre still up and running and that theyre still fighting this fight the fact that you know in recent days and weeks they have been allegation that there were these are we can buy the base. That they would not be able to shoot further into territory but they proved otherwise the missile attack happened just hours before saudi arabia was due to announce its annual budget as well as members of the royal family senior ministers were also expected to attend a social media post from a Government Agency confirmed a missile had been intercepted but no casualties were reported. The saudi the coalition which has been conducting air strikes again to people in yemen for nearly three years retaliated with more strikes in the southern part of the capital sanaa speaking on the groups t. V. Channel who the leader. Said the missile attack marks one thousand days since the war in yemen started. Here today can tell missile was launched. Palace in the heart of city of saudi arabia this is our answer to them and the whole world the more crimes you perpetrated the more to renig. You will meet nothing but more missiles. This isnt the first missile attack on saudi arabia in november the International Airport in riyadh was narrowly missed in the strike the saudi government has accused regional rival iran of smuggling missiles and technology to the beams and allegation tehran denies. The war in yemen has created what the u. N. Describes as the worlds worst humanitarian crisis since the start of the conflict at least ten thousand civilians have been killed and millions are on the brink of famine and as the fighting continues many fear the situation on the ground could get worse. Aljazeera well the Un Security Council has been discussing whether iran is complying with the twenty fifteen Nuclear Agreement the Missile Launch from yemen featured in that debate to mike hanna has more now from u. N. Headquarters in new york. The secretary general a firm that iran was in full compliance with its commitment to nonnuclear proliferation under the joint comprehensive plan of action indorsed by resolution twenty two thirty one but he raised questions about the possibility that iran was moving conventional weapons across his border and concerns expressed by some of the Security Council members would lead to mr and blabber on the lucky i reject egypt would like to express its particular concern over the information and evidence connected with irans supply of weapons and missiles to militias. Encouraging them to use those weapons to target neighboring countries the Us Ambassador was adamant that the missiles recently fired at saudi targets were of origin including the most recent well we dont yet have sufficient and site into this particular attack it bears all the hallmarks of previous attacks using a rainy and provided weapons it is only a matter of time before one of these missiles hits the target the secretary general said that the origin of the missiles is under investigation and the Security Council will be briefed at what he called the appropriate time but the Russian Ambassador was adamant that the un is not empowered to monitor irans development or deployment of conventional nonNuclear Weapons moving with inability to pneumonia we once again need to draw your attention to the practice of the secretariat conducting investigations investigations for which the secretary has neither the authority nor the expertise such actions are carried out without the prior consent of the Security Council and not legitimate and the information obtained in the course of such actions cannot be considered accurate and cannot be part of the report the Russian Ambassador rejected the u. S. Suggestion that the joint comprehensive plan. Action be renegotiated to include conventional weapons something that iran continues to insist it will not do the scene is set for vigorous debate among Security Council members in the days ahead well earlier on tuesday iran condemned the u. S. For accusing it of supplying the missile fired into saudi arabia from yemen last month tehran summoned the swiss ambassador who represents u. S. Interests in iran to pass on that message it described the allegation made by the u. S. Ambassador to the u. N. Nikki haley as irresponsible and provocative meanwhile the saudi Led Military Coalition fighting in yemen is being accused of killing at least one hundred thirty six civilians in just ten days the u. N. Says they died between december the sixth and december the sixteenth these are the incidents the u. N. Was able to verify the number of casualties could be higher one attack involved seven air strikes on a prison and son our last week where forty five detainees were killed and the u. N. Has once again warned that yemen is facing the worlds worst humanitarian crisis and is calling for the blockade on the country to be completely lifted yemen is the largest Food Insecurity crisis in the world and no recent humanitarian needs overviews a dent of fide almost eighteen Million People who are in need of support food wise the prognosis is not good if. The blockade is not fully completely lifted and the interference no work is nor reduce the taken away then the results and pushing back on call and pushing back on famine over the last six months will be lost. As president of the Arabia Foundation he says iran is using the conflict in yemen to undermine saudi arabia. Everybody knows that c. N. N. Has been using with these sorry iran has been using the host these in yemen to gain a leverage to gain pressure card on saudi arabia yemen being you know on saturday of a southern dorrance doorstep and therefore thats important to Saudi National security so yes it might take some time for the u. N. To flush out the evidence but having looked at all the components of that missile displayed by the u. N. And the u. S. Ambassador last week i think there is little doubt in the mind of most analysts that those parts are originating in iran iran did seize the opportunity to capitalize on the many conflict and as the host sees grew stronger it realized if they had something to work with there and so its successfully transformed yemen from attentional issue to a key pressure card that it could use against its primary rival in the region which is saudi arabia yemen first and foremost is a civil conflict one pitting the many aspects of Yemeni Civil Society and the political groups there so there is no easy solution because even if the regional and the International Powers that be where an alignment it would be difficult to get to a political resolution to the problem there and given the realities both in thought on and into the elbe we dont see positive trend lines we see negative trend lines where saudi arabia increasingly has to play defense and Iranian Office i think a good starting point would be a deescalation and certainly what we see today with the firing of this missile targeting the saudi capital really the saudi equivalent of the white house the m on the palace there is not a step in the right direction its it is an escalade torrie move perhaps one that was ordered straight out of the head on so this is again not something that will help to resolving the situation and i think ultimately it would have to start with the regional powers but we also have to be realistic that conflict containment rather than conflict resolution is what we were could ultimately hope for at least in the short term. Campaigning for catalonia snap parliamentary election is drawing to a close catalans head to the polls on thursday for a vote that could decide if their region breaks away from spain call panel has more from barcelona as voters consider their options. Its a last brush before campaigning closes a rally for the separatists d r c o catalan the Republican Left Party former speaker of the Regional Parliament come a fork adele is lucky to be here a tool shes free on bail for now but faces criminal charges for a rebellion. I dont think anybody thats alone imagine what was going to happen we could never have imagined that. After the october secession referendum prosecutors arrested key cattle and leaders for their role in organizing that vote and the spanish Central Government dissolved the capital and parliament a front seat is left empty for Party Leader John kid s. Judges refused bail and instead kept him in prison fearing he would use the hustings to rabble rouse thursdays parliamentary election isnt specifically about secession but it is the most polarizing issue voters will choose between parties who want catalonia to remain part of spain or others have clearly not renounced their goal of a breakaway republic veteran catherine politician artur mass hopes madrid look for compromise not confrontation if the Central Government. Had a real positive proposal for the cattle and people what they have to do to put that proposal on the table. And to compare this proposal with the proposal for a real independent country but the necessary mothers riding high in opinion polls has little appetite for negotiating her center right Citizens Party has backed madrid in its crackdown against the separatists shell need to build a coalition but believes the only way to resolve the political turmoil is by beating the secessionists in the election will try to win will take to win and i think it is possible we we are seeing the pools and we see that it is it is nothing new to be here. As the hours tick down activists from the left wing see you people know vital vote system up for grabs even in barcelonas backstreets their party is small but was kingmaker in the last election they make for an easy political bedfellows they stand against spain and the monarchy and thermally in favor of a cattle and republic run by the working classes. Aljazeera barcelona a procedural error is forcing the u. S. House of representatives to vote again on a contentious one point five trillion dollar tax reform bill will do so on weapons day earlier the bill easily passed the republican controlled house bringing President Donald Trump one step closer to his first major legislative victory. But soon afterward Senate Officials declared that three items in the massive bill violate senate rules the senate is going ahead with the debate thats taking place right now is expected to vote on the bill very soon. This is one of the most important pieces of legislation that congress has passed in decades to help the American Worker to help grow the american economy. This is profound change and this is change that is going to put our country on the right path well the bill represents the most comprehensive revamp of the american tax code in thirty years it permanently cuts the Corporate Tax rate all the way from thirty five to twenty one percent most individuals and families will also see reductions in the tax they pay but unlike the Corporate Tax rate these cuts will only be temporary the Child Tax Credit will be increased to an average of about three hundred dollars per child for families earning between twenty five to forty thousand a year but it does virtually nothing for those earning less and the bill also includes loopholes for getting around estate taxes death taxes in other words Gabriel Elizondo has more joining us live now from new york so apart from this procedural speed bump this is a done deal gave. Its looking like it yeah i mean nothing in washington is a done deal and till its a done deal as they say but this is about as close to a done deal as you can get of course as you mentioned theres this procedural error that was very embarrassing for the republicans quite frankly and theyre going to have to reboot on this on wednesday but theres no indication that theyll be any change in the voting whatsoever we expect that it will be voted in favor like it was earlier on tuesday evening its now being voted as you mentioned in the senate and we expect that it will probably pass the senate as well a very narrow margin but by all indications it will pass on purely partisan lines republicans voting for this tax overhaul democrats voting against it why is this a big win for President Donald Trump primarily because up until now he had zero legislative victories and his Party Controls of course the white house and both chambers of congress so if he would not have got this passed he would have been able he would have had to say i had no legislative victories in my first year as president even though my Party Controls all of washington that would have been a disaster for trump who already has the lowest Approval Ratings of any modern president modern times so this is a big win for him its a big win for the republicans as you mentioned its a tax overhaul the biggest in decades and the republicans and trump say that this is going to be a massive tax cut for corporations in the u. S. And also that about eighty percent of american households will receive a tax cut thats how the republicans are spinning it and theyre saying that this will propel the u. S. Economy forward for the next years if not decades at least thats what theyre saying explain one thing to escape i mean despite what the trumpet ministration tried to do with health care and Health Care Insurance this particular piece of legislation has gone through wholly and singularly ole most directly along party lines how does that work. Yeah and thats part of the reason why and most of the polls indicate that this is not a very popular tax overhaul and you think americans are getting a tax cut thats what the republicans are saying right but the polls are indicating that americans dont like this bill so somethings amiss there and whats amiss there is this is very partisan primarily because this was a bill that was written in secret behind closed doors by a small group of republican lawmakers and leadership and they didnt release it to the public into last friday the bill is over five hundred pages long there are still tax officials trying to sort through this whole thing but the republicans were pushing this forward so fast why because what i said earlier they needed a victory the Congress Needed to provide some victory to trump trump was pressuring the republican lawmakers to get a victory because we all know trump. Positions himself as a man of either victories or losses and he likes to talk about victories and winning he needed to have something to win on so thats why they push this through so fast and thats why quite frankly you saw this procedural error that happened in the going after a vote on it it goes to that so why are so Many Americans the latest poll showing fifty five percent are against this tax overhaul whole why many reasons but it boils down to two things really number one is that it looks like the vast majority of these tax cuts are going to go to wealthy corporations and the top one percent of wage earners number thats number one and number two the working class of the us the working poor are going to receive very small tax cuts yes theyll receive tax cuts very small ones that will not be permanent they will go away after a few years people have seen this and thats why not only democrats but overall the latest polls are showing that the vast majority americans just dont see this as being something that is going to benefit them in the long term will it benefit wall street will benefit corporations will benefit the one percent. Absolutely would benefit everyone else theres serious d
