Here she said this is a young gal she was under 25 years old she says we are now claiming something for ourselves she said to many of my parents generation my grandparents generation she told me that just accepted. What she claimed was a corruption on the asylum what she claimed was the. Elites as she said it was early orders running this island she said no and thats why you saw so many young people and guess is this is a complicated place its an island of all only 3000000 people but if youre 6000000 puerto rican americans live in the mainland its states its a complicated place but they have a local government and need these Text Messages from this governor that just now announced hes resigning record of us to go these Text Messages everyone said just confirmed what everyone believes tear or 2 decades im being told that that people do not fit this is their leaders do not respect the people and these Text Messages actually when he was talking about potential allegations you know in effect which is well so listen i mean this is basically people saying its everything so now you know what theyre saying this is the 1st step and this is the 1st time ever on this island that people have rose enough and basically said weve had enough and that people have taken to the streets over consecutive days and forced a top leader here to simply resign its historic its never happened before and thats why youre seeing these images that youre looking at right now ok again for the moment stay close thanks very much will come back so im sure in the next few minutes or so or indeed in the next hour lets stay with these latest live pictures lets bring in Kenneth Mclean talk hes formally Lieutenant Governor of puerto rico and currently a senior Public Policy advisor at polytechnic he joins us on the phone from san juan Kenneth Mcclintock welcome to aljazeera can you just share with us your thoughts at this momentous time. You know i think that this is one of the most Historic Events that the 3000000 american citizens a living for equal kind of have lived through throughout their lifetime and its a moment that we have to remember for many decades to come it is in part a result of the reaction of our people last monday we had 8100000. At the march the largest in the history of perico wasnt 500000 we have to stick to the facts of this but it was 100000 and it was definitely the largest political event or or people event in the history of puerto rico and now we have to look forward to having a new governor our 2nd female governor will be governor one the basket is currently the attorney general in puerto rico and we have team night behind her then an agenda of healing and in agenda of not 4 knowing the Economic Growth that we find here having after 13 years to continue to expand. We weve had chronically difficult economic situations for over a decade and things have been improving recently and we have to make sure that that theres a lot of steps back and in that process and have people also know that record still beautiful are every bit. And that we need are your tourist dollars here and for equal in the future ok well come on to the economic wish list in a 2nd if we may but if we can just back up a little bit as we watch these live pictures from the capital city san juan how did this place get to the stage where the top 14 positions in government. I do not have an incumbent how did we get to a stage where the governor it would appear was choosing not to resign when it was clear he should have resigned because there was nobody to fill his position albeit even on a temporary basis i take on board of course what youre saying about one device is she will succeed him presumably as i say on a temporary basis but those 14 top jobs. And the governor couldnt go because there was nobody to fill in ohio i dont know what youre talking about about 14 top job. You know what the 3rd top job is the attorney general and she is a wonder is going to succeed and we have several others before job which is the treasury secretary the only reason he wont wont be available to succeed is because he 32 years old and you have to be 35 to to succeed to the governorship but but you know we have some bacon to use but most of the top jobs and put in in the government of puerto rico are covered you know that after the governor and the executive branch you have a new secretary of state who resigned last week and the attorney general whos a 3rd one in line patients taking over and demonstrate that but ricos system works the constitutional system works you also have our member of congress and sheen in place of the president serve it even plays you have the speaker of the house hes in place well i dont know where this idea that the 14 top jobs are vacant most of the jobs are not taken ok and each person will be doing the job that corresponds to them and i just want to interrupt you sir because were worried we might lose the line because Everyone Wants to talk to everyone else in puerto rico just now so in case we do lose the long 11 last point you were talking there about the economy you were talking there about puerto rico wanting to his dollars can i suggest. To you with respect youre setting the bar not low enough because if the protesters are right youve got another issue to deal with it is in demick systemic corruption thats what the protesters are saying this theyre saying were tired of it weve had a generation of this weve had this since the 1970 s. The 1980 s. How do you carry through on root and Branch Reform to get rid of not just corrupt politicians but also the people involved in that process of corruption. Well because we are stronger and very grown up for the laws now and because we grabbed the attention of the federal government after maria really reminded them that we do exist here the caribbean on that we are under the American Flag theres a lot more going on in terms of investigating corruption in terms of arresting people for corruption and that will continue and in fact just the night before this happened we had a plane for those of federal agents that arrived in puerto rico presumably to do their strengthening investigations or to carry out. Corruption arrests in the next few days and i think that is very good the more people that are arrested doesnt mean that there are more corruption it means that corruption is now being investigated and prosecuted as never before so that will be a positive step to help fix things up ok mr mcclintock great to talk to you thank you for your insight we do appreciate the time this just sum up for you if youre just joining us here on aljazeera with those latest live pictures politics and puts a rico moving very fast when we came on air what 20 minutes ago we had a governor who said he was going to resign he tended his resignation in effect that would kick in officially on august the 2nd his name is ricardo reseller hes offered his resignation that will kick in and a little over one week from now we now know and it was being confirmed by Kenneth Mcclintock former Lieutenant Governor of puerto rico he will be replaced we assume on a temporary basis by the secretary of justice one basket as you can see them mass protests of celebration on the streets of san juan at the news that the governor has finally listened to 2 weeks of mass protests and decided to resign more on that for us and as we can also of course on the web site al jazeera dot com. Now we move on north korea has conducted its 1st missile test since the us President Donald Trump met kim jong un nearly a month ago south korea and japan say 2 projectiles were fired into the sea off the coast of warm sun earlier this month north korea warned that military drills in south korea could derail a resumption of Nuclear Talks with washington rob mcbride following that story for us out of seoul so rob it feels very symbolic. Thats right a there has been a guarded response here in south korea typically the government here doesnt want to jeopardize all of the good work thats been done in building bridges restoring later relations across the d. M. Z. So there has been a guarded response but the Defense Ministry spokesperson has called this a military threat rather than a provocation as also said though that it doesnt help ease tensions on the peninsula which is something of an understatement theres been a slightly harder response a more robust response from japan japans defense minister saying that these are 2 missiles could have been but listed missiles which in turn would have been in violation of u. N. Resolutions which could possibly have further consequences judging by the trajectory the distance they travel just over 400 kilometers these missiles were reaching an altitude of 50 kilometers theyre very similar to 2 missiles that were fired during may which in turn was the most serious missile testing since 2017 so this does seem to be a Serious Development and it does seem to be north koreas way of saying its not happy with forthcoming military exercises that are due to be held between south korean and u. S. Forces in august these exercises have been scaled down from exercises that have taken place previously nonetheless north korea is not happy about those and possibly this also does send a message in the direction of the United States peter rob will leave it there many thanks lets go back to san juan rolling events coming to us out of the puerto rican capital our correspondent Gabriel Elizondo is there for us tracking events events moving very fast just in the past 30 minutes or so what else do we know we understand that we are now getting a new not the new secretary justice but the secretary of justice will fill in for mr rosello. Yeah thats right it does. Appear that secretary of justice will be the new governor normally under local law i would be the secretary of state it becomes a governor if the governor resigns however the problem is the secretary of state resigned last week because he was involved in the scandal too he was one of the 14 cabinet ministers to resign were just about 2 blocks away from the Governors Mansion as you might be able to see behind me people are starting to they are ecstatic and this is been a movement led by young people as i said you a few minutes ago and i want to bring one of them in to meet you right now what is your name im heidi i right how old are you im mighty youre 19 years old youve been out here protesting for this governor to leave why we have been what we needed to get him out hes been hes been a dictator to us basically he didnt care about our debts he didnt care about the money when he does make conscious for him and his friend and we just need him out and we finally have them out we have a rush of emotions right now were feeling youre for it were going to run to streets now you know the 1st generation to get him out what did you feel when you heard him say a few half an hour ago that he was going to resign what was going through your mind i was i was euphoric i couldnt believe it i the 1st generation do you know how how proud you feel you know the 1st you know racing to get bought for 9 out of the aisle just because we set so we went to this week so we took power of it and this wont be our last time you know were going to say that one back and were going to get them out ok youre 19 years old 5 what prompted you to go out to the streets for the last 2 weeks as such a young person and what was it about it im studying sociology at the university so im not really on what are you learning about it and its something that has been taught to me you know if you dont like something if youve been a prize fight for your rights and we were where wed be in the present we needed to fight for us so it was all background and i want to study law so i know what it has what we have. Or to take your friends came out to protest or yeah. Listen it was about the Text Messages originally but it didnt go beyond that though when really beyond that the Text Messages i would say were like. The take it was the tip of the iceberg so it is best that these rights of emotions these movements uses to get him out hes abuse and of his power hes taken contacts out of for all his friends millions upon millions of money had been given to us by the Us Government i just feel my hair so we needed to get him out. There no you or your we feel. And him and today for his right here it is a day for history thank you for talking to us when i retire thank you so much well you heard it there shes 19 years old and she really fits the profile of what weve seen here for the last 2 weeks its been really a protest movement by all Puerto Ricans of all walks of life but primarily the young people that came out and you saw her just say just there its a historic evening here in puerto rico this is an island that has seen nothing like this it was the worst political crisis puerto rico has ever seen and the people took to the streets for 2 weeks and the governor Just Announced that hes stepping down and theres not going to be a change once the jubilation begins to subside however gave they did issue a search warrants not so very long ago and i guess its important to separate out the level of assumption that people have there understandable perhaps when it comes to government Corruption National government corruption local government corruption from what we may find out if this goes to i guess a criminal case because if the authorities are involved if the police are involved somebody is going to have to be charged with something at some point. Perhaps and the Congress Year actually set up a panel. That just today on wednesday actually said that there were 6 Text Messages from the governor there were criminal of those 6 for potentially serious crimes i want to preface that by saying serious the governor has not been charged with any crime on this island theres a lot of suspicion theres a lot of. Playing fast and loose with the rules theres a perception here is you heard from our law our last guest but the governors as of right now is not been charged with the crime but clearly this is going to go up the chain of command here and he is being investigated his cell phone was confiscated by investigators on wednesday among several other of his aides as well and also its important to point out that what started this all more than 2 weeks ago even before his Text Messages were leaked for 2 of his cabinet ministers that were arrested by the f. B. I. Of the mainland of the United States arrested for allegations of corruption so thats why a lot of people here are saying to cabinet ministers arrested by the f. B. I. Somethings going on here and they want it investigated and this was the 1st step was to get him out of office is there a cost list of new the younger politicians gave kind of waiting in the wings if you will who are on taint seeds by these allegations of corruption. Thats an answer for about 20 years from now the young woman that we just interviewed right here that you did search she might be the next governor 2030 years from now to answer your question though it is going to be interesting to see when and 30 years from now the people that took part in this protest that youre seeing behind me what their future will be are there is is there a Younger Generation yes there are there are 6000000 puerto rican americans that live in the mainland of the United States thousands of them have come back to puerto rico to take part in this protest over the last 2 weeks and many of them have said we are now going to potentially stay to be part of whats the future of this island so. Yes listen is this an island its mostly governed by wealthy well connected elites yes the Current Governor that just stepped down his father was a governor he comes from a very wealthy family but theres this is certainly sparked a movement where i think youre going to see a lot more younger people start to assume some sort of leadership theyve already started to do it just here in the streets but in the immediate term its going to be the minister of justice they will take over the governorship as far as those young people who are protesting a russian jew right now agape do they already have Political Representation within the Parliament Within the political system or has that yet to kind of evolve and develop itself perhaps from their own ranks when people like 19 year old sociology student you were talking to. Me when the political aspirations coalesce around something in the years to come. They are not represented right now in the Puerto Rican Congress thats just a fact the Puerto Rican Congress is controlled by 2 major parties one of which is a party of the Current Governor that just stepped down so what youre seeing. Here is people on the streets this woman we just young woman we just spoke to theyre basically saying were not represented so were not going to wait were going to the streets and thats what weve seen over the last 2 weeks youre right though youre leading into a very important point here that theres celebration right here on the streets right now but whats going to happen tomorrow whats going to happen next week whats going to happen next month the next year those are going to be the major changes. Because in some ways its been a struggle to get this governor out of office as these protests are have seen but the harder thing is to get elected and so what i think youre really seeing now and what weve seen last couple weeks is younger people like i said earlier that are saying we now realize the importance of our vote on this island and youre seeing engaged young people 25 and younger that are saying we can make a difference here and now its a question of after they take it off the streets where does it go from there because right now the Puerto Rican Congress is not represented by the young woman that we just spoke to its not represented by 30 to 25 year olds 30 years olds 22 year olds its represented by an older generation that have run this island for decades thanks very much ok lets just redirect the latest pictures of you just joining us here on aljazeera whats happening is we are witnessing the reaction in real time in the puerto rican couple sombong to the announcement of the resignation of the puerto rican government recalled sello he announced his resignation conceding that he could no longer really stay on in power off to 2 weeks of mass protests and the prospect the real prospect of all impeachment proceedings being launched against him lots more on the web site al jazeera dot com is the address more news in about 28 minutes between now and then the stream. Ok you know in the stream today while puerto rican scorning and governor of a cairo were saying go to resign im really could be hundreds of thousands of residents have taken to the streets in a historic wave of protests well speak with those who are demanding change some of your thoughts via twitter and you tube. Share of course indras on you are in this story. The story has not only been big on the streets of puerto rico but it has also been trending online rica lot of people say. Ricky alderman c. E. O. Or resign or ricky its become a rallying cry on social media with many using that hash tag to share Photos Videos and overall frustration with the u. S. Territories governor the conversation came after Puerto Rico Center for Investigative Journalism published a group chat featuring room say oh and other government officials they made massage mystic and homophobic remarks about opposition leaders journalists and other public figures the scandal dubbed ricky leaks ignited days of protest with many flooding the streets near the governors residence calling on him to step down but it was a house refused to resign despite mounting public pressure on sunday he announced via Facebook Live it that he will remain in office but not seek a 2nd term to reinforce that position during a fox news interview on monday. My effort my commitment is to follow through on some of the efforts that i established for the people of puerto rico that includes establishing again a plan that ive already circulated with members within the white house so that we can battle this corruption. Well his continued refusal to resign has fueled the biggest protests to hit the island in years hundreds of thousands of people blocked one of san juans major highways among them pop star ricky martin a subject of the home of her remarks heres what he had to say. The future. Will be a lot of emotions on the streets and well talk about that in today show let me thank you very much for make it so lets get this conversation started with. A political anthropologist she joins us from san juan luna c. M. Way goss is an artist in l g p t q activist she is in puerto rico and zola boy is a senator with the new Progressive Party at last the same party as governor. She joins us from the capital san juan hello everybody its good to have you here with us that you asked the senate to such a great question just before we got on the air i said hold to its you all political im for apologies but today you are a journalist what was that question is the question that so many of us are curious about go ahead larry but you say you start out of the season i dont as a read time is going the is the governor going to step down or would this you know have any inside information for us on the. Satta well yes of course our 1st of all thank you thank you im so honored to be part of those and think of my league and family for the support you need. All. The fun and so he here at for that is. A team we thank you for that what do you need to have to answer that no i do not have any inside information but i do have to say that so long weeks now ive been asking the governor going on to say you know little until 2 days ago he was the president of the Political Party that i belong to i have i have asked him to resign and as you were mentioning at the beginning there is whats whats happening but the recall i would say that not only because of legal chat where as it might be it was saying many people were offended that people that are overweight members of the commune eat the women people that die during your you can marry at their their families theyre all of that and i am a friend but i would have to say that what were seeing today its not only the result of that of the illegal bat chat but also people are tired of corruption unfortunately the recall is not the 1st time that we see members of the executive branch or even the legislative branch being accused or you know a criminal charges being brought against them for corruption so i think that what we seem to bury its and make sure of the shatt but also corruption and people at last and i am very happy for the people at last are raising their voice and say enough lets change the way we do things simple or recall. Youre one of those people be raising their voice as you point out on the streets protesting tell us about the atmosphere. Is in puerto rico right now from a perspective from a protest a space but. At the current time there was a lot of unrest and a lot of. Im going to i saw a lot of words to the fire is that people are very fed up people are very upset people want. To resign but they also want the government to be held accountable for its object for its negligence right people have been suffering before the hurricane they suffered through the hurricane another suffering post hurricane this is common most people being on heard of not listened to and ricky in particular being a sort of figure that basically taking all of the brunt of being kind of called out finally you know people are very very good people are out here celebrating of course people are coming together and community and people are really working towards actually mobilizing together thats really important thats a big deal but though we got to do that you havent seen this happen in a very very long time and to see these people come together you have people Community People you have people who are brought in. Monday and i dont know if youre not you have people who brought food for people you have kids i mean you had a very young people bringing 15000 water bodies for people things that the government was unable to do post hurricane think the community built together what politico has constructed itself because of the poor people here because the people spending for themselves them and finally they came together because of you saw this chap but it was that chat was real life you know it was not just dismissed arguments and the best thing to humanization of people that was what they were doing to people here thats what they were acting upon it wasnt just words it was just hearing the ridicule of no way that these people did not. There are not about. A big hair or no. What is so in the things that of course here no i mean known there i see you trying to get in there zoe but i want to bring this in our community was watching and ill give this to you so a couple of people that are really elaborating on what you heard luna say so this is lies on twitter she says ricky leaks as theyre called crystallize a puerto ricos political corruption because it was him and his cronies mocking the dead it was a massage in a cigar aisle heaped at political opponents feminists even beauty queens it was the squandering of maria donations and thats Hurricane Maria on gifts and travels and she goes on but one other person sent us a video comment and in it she speaks about why this is different and unlike anything else picking up on that point that you made luna this is alexander Marie Miranda shes a campaigner at Amnesty International puerto rico and heres what she told the stream what makes the protests here in britain. Are. There alone really people not particularly. People are literally just social action. Is not a. Reason more so the catalyst so people have to. Really. Kind of creating a different country a country that is weak and ready this is so it can you pick up on what shes saying there have you seen anything like this. I have to tell you that now we have paddles there are. Demonstrations. But not as biggest this one but i wanted to if i may i wanted to tell luna that this is my very 1st term as a as an elected official and i have to say that some of the very beginning that i started back in january 2018 i have felt that people in puerto rico not only to get involved more involved in what we do im a senator and what we discuss every day there will impact political regal and for me too many times we really side and do things there and you dont hear people raising their voice in favor or against it so i would ask lorna and everybody who was involved in this kind of manifestations are there was traces that we this cannot stop we need. To keep on top of it and and watch what were doing and criticize all or raise your voice in full in favor of what you think its the right thing for puerto rico and the other thing that outcast would would be you know. Im a senator and has been involved in for politics for many years and one thing that i do. It makes me sad to hear and i dont a sceptic is that many times every some people say oh you know all politicians are corrupt all of them are are bad all of them are taking advantage of their position and i have to say that that generalization is us bad ass when you say a women are the same all members of they. Are the same though not many many of us are sitting in a political position because we do little that only have its a get a cup pause because i know the owner is dying to have a conversation with him i got back yet. Now look ok yes you have you are a new political leader and whatever term you want to call it that youre asking people who hold and more space to be so to talk and be more outspoken the problem is when they are now spoken when has he actually like response we talked about i talked about heavily that collector so many star last year was talking about the mans about the instability of the government i talked about gender by law and women dying and it was why you so if youre asking for the people in general to have more voices and to have more say the government has to be you have pushers have to be accountable for the things that may have done and if you do not like to hear that were saying oh the government is corrupt its because of all these pieces youre spending that you are not your star corrupt then you need to also know that if these people around you that are your colleagues that are in office theyre corrupt you are complicit if you are now holding them accountable and if we are blaming the government as a whole its because you function of a wall and because you are the power. For the puerto rican people or so when we say this this this this person are doing things is because you are and even if its not an individual problems if the systemic problem there is an issue with negligence by puerto rican government it is not just about us they know were calling him out and were and were putting him on and were putting him on that and people are making it seem like its just taking on other airlines but in never started with and its not going to end well so if you want the people to be more involved youll need to give space to people have been paying and you need to be. Interrupted. And at that they think everything youre saying and so but i love it if the senator would speak not just about herself as an individual politician but also her role in the Political Party because she has taken you know early and asking you know her self as an individual for a brickie to step down but she has not really make claims on the card and the party has maggie walk towards impeachment which is not what the what the people on the streets want it they dont want an impeachment process that that we dont know what it might end up and it might end up in him being not carry of carry out if i may impeachment is that for me seems so hypothetically that its not a useful conversation to have today at this moment because i i was suggesting that the governor of puerto rico would not still be in his job by the weekend i would suggest any hope that i ignoring. What the party was not moving for him to step down until yesterday the political her Political Party was asking for the people to calm down to go home and let them do their work and move toward them each man i want to know i literally have a little a little thing like jennifer not going how individual politicians are going to change the how the Political Parties are going to change because what people want here also is a change in the plan the party system let me not surjective here let me let me tell you one thing and just i beg that you will members of groups like for example. You lou now belong to this group that fight every day for womens rights and i applaud you but you know that when you belong to a group you cannot be responsible for what all the members in the group within the group dool so what i have to say to you i know many people race are for east and some people within government dont listen to them or actually dont want to listen to them but me as a senator and the history is right there every time. I am. I have evaluated. A bill before it becomes. A lot important i have invited i have open the doors so i can hear everybody who has something to say about the subject i have opened the doors with that and that i can do what i can not force anybody else to do it and about really how do you continue your setting the alligator larry because i dont know you have let me go to hades i am not going to make this a personal grilling of senator. Because that is the the issue in puerto rico is much more a so much because the one in difference in a senate has attention to our constituents moving on so because this is beyond just the governor i want to bring up this this is from willie on twitter who says demands go beyond even the resignation however who whoever is next needs to one audit the debt to protect services 3 for tax pensions and for declare a state of emergency on gender violence so thats just some of the demands that people have but i want to share with you even a few more this via a video comment we got from men while rodriguez bunch hes a labor and social justice advocate and here are his demands. The demand for the resignation of the god of the said you know was just a sparkle that ignited what has been regarded by many as a revolution we are now demanding the repeal of from messa a lawyer not by congress by physical control board was appointed to push for a study of the measures the purge of people to benefit wall street we need the consolation of the dead and we also need a true process of some of them to put an end to these illegal colonial rejean. Says ill give that to you because it is all those lists of things that people are now asking for how realistic are they and do they dilute the 1st the focus here 1st of all a miss a about repealing but a messiah. Against the board but the truth is that we are economy of the United States thats why im a lot there are reasons i am an east. Them statehood because i believe in equality and i want to be as a u. S. Citizen that i am where i want to have the very same responsibilities and obligations so i do our belief that we need to and this is called the new status and i fight through that act and some other people might have another answer to ending the colonial status but even that i agree with with what theyre asking what the truth is that we would have to go to congress and law yes much as we could to get that result because we are 1st and we dont have any senators or representatives or congressman or limit and if i there with voter rights so i guess as a as i get up in here an appropriate time to bring a President Trump on what hes been saying about puerto rico so this was the president on monday i have a list. Hes a terrible governor i think you have an even worse mayor of san juan shes horrible i think shes horrible i watched her my people did nothing but complain about her when we helped them with their hurricane problem the mayor of san juan puerto rico is a horror show shes incompetent grossly incompetent at the same time the governor is not good the congress of the United States handed him 92000000000. 00 and that 92 1000000000. 00 is in the hands of incompetent people and very corrupt people and i think the government of the United States have to be careful im the best thing that ever happened to puerto rico because we did a great job in puerto rico. I wish you could see so is i rolling all the way for you that she didnt see that she made it for you in just a moment i mean by this is this is what you go political africa polish you look at puerto rico so you hear President Trump saying that so when we look at next steps for could possibly happen from this situation would you want i want to have a couple things 1st i think that in a weird way trump might be a good thing that happened to puerto rico in the sense that he cast a media spotlight on it after Hurricane Maria i have no doubt that if he had not been in power and if so many people were not caught up in trying to find his katrina we would not have had so much attention and so many people in the United States would not have discovered that you know Puerto Ricans were u. S. Citizens that were rican were under colonial rule that there was this thing called the jones act so when in a weird way he did create a kind of a moment in which different political internet is can be discussed however one thing ive noticed from the protesters is that they say bitterly clearly that part of why they were able to achieve the numbers that they did was because this was not politicians usual in puerto rico this was not about the usual campaigns for the Political Parties as as the exist none of the Political Parties called for this movement or supported this movement and even the ones that i mean i should say that the mainstream Political Parties and support this movement and even the new emerging political groups they didnt make this about themselves and i and the young people that ive talked to involved in the movement they all tell me that they want Something Else that want independent candidates they want a rethinking how call it political is going to play out in puerto rico and i certainly dont want to put a congress and the senator on the spot because it was very generous of her to come and speak in a moment where politicians in puerto rico are very much you know all on the hot seat no matter which seat their city. But i just wonder what how she thinks her party and Political Parties in general are going to be able to reinvent themselves and move and move past this and become something what the people here want which is not the Political Parties that have existed to date and not just because of their corruption. Actually that is a very good question i have to tell you that every time that i have been able to talk to the press i. I say that it would be so sad and lonely sad but bad for puerto rico if all of what were going through ends up being ok once read. The governor of the house at all resigned thats all and everybody goes home i think that one of the recounts we had to include myself we need to keep on working because one of the rico urgently needs every form of the Political Parties and also government and i have to be sincere with you and everybody is watching this i dont have all the answers but i do i can tell you that for example you were asking about the impeachment process i dont think this is a this has to do with our Political Party it has to do with the duties that we represent the devs and senators have for our land and i have to tell you that when the president of the or the speaker of the house i should say joining manda said that he was going to have just 3 our legal specialists ah from different political parities evaluate the shatt to see if theres a new recent 2 percent or percent charges against the governor i was very happy because that was the start of why what i think should happen but i have to say too as a senator i have to wait until the house of representatives decides what theyre going to do with that as a parent you know least for me to insert a Community Comment because what happens as of next is exactly what people are talking about so on here to one person says there is a replacement is also prop the party is continue to put forward dirty politicians that all are corrupt but it Means Nothing that there is no accountability for people like or is a so ill give this one to you lou not just in the closing minute of the show here what do you want to happen next. I just want to reiterate some of the conversation that just happened will me and then it so actually short even better he said that time what do you want to happen next i think that 2 towns who are at the ranch that there needs to be state of emergency against jones or violence it means to be addressed because it was there has already ignored it there needs to be an audit of the public for 30 thought there needs to be another demanded that anybody who was corrupt and abused need to be prosecuted by the courts they need to be held accountable publicly i dont need to start hounding i think that there needs to be a commitment to protecting women black people or the other documents of the manacles that are in full authority now to be you Community Yeah i think you have given the senator quite a to do list and the president blessed and luna and zoe and jane bath thank you so much for helping us saying what is happening in puerto rico right now at the time we have lake and i will see it next time always on my thanks so much. Also ahead long awaited testimony from the special counsel who investigated the Trump Campaign leaves both sides hearing what they wanted to hear. In the last hour the governor of puerto rico Ricardo Rosello has announced his resignation the decision comes after nearly 2 weeks of mass protests where tens of thousands of people took to the streets of a leaked messages that showed him making sexist and homophobic comments sello will be leaving office next month oldest the 2nd. That is going on that all the where ok despite having a mandate from the people who elected me democratically today i feel that continuing in this position presents censored mountable difficulties adding heard the complaints spoken to my family thought of my children and in prayers i for taking the following decision i announced to you today that ill be resigning as governor effective friday 2nd of august our correspondent Gabriel Elizondo joins us live from san juan whats the atmosphere like. It was celebration quite frankly its a little after 1 am local time on thursday in the streets of old saddle on and as you might be able to see behind me and maybe even here it is absolute celebration thousands of people packed the old city of san juan right in front of the Governors Mansion protesting for hours calling for him to resign this capped more than 12 days of protests here in puerto rico to end the biggest political crisis in this islands history quite frankly there are 6000000 puerto rican americans actually that live on the mainland of the United States us remember puerto rico is a u. S. Territory thousands of them have come back to puerto rico to take part in what they say is in their words a revolution i want to introduce you to one of them kwan step in for me this is sarah about a year from Chicago Illinois you came here specifically to take part in this is a correct that is correct i flew in sunday night specifically to be part of history what are you feeling right now that the governor has resigned well i feel a sense of relief and empowerment because we finally made history in getting him to resign after so many days here a puerto rican american of course live in the mainland why was it important for you to come back here to take part because after the suffering of my country through the Hurricane Maria and the continuing suffering and the corruption we need to put a stop to it and i needed to be part and be with my brothers and sisters and making sure and put my little part to make sure whatever we could do to stop the government from corruption was this more than about the governor Ricardo Rossi oh would you go beyond that or was it just about his Text Messages and his government besides the Text Messages with i think it was the tip of the iceberg but it was also the rampant corruption in his government though and were fed up with that with the corruption taking public funds and not it trickling down to the people and needed. What kind of movement was this on monday we saw more than 500000 people on the streets tonight we saw. Thousands more what was this that was happening here on this island this was a Resistance Movement i would say finally you know all the power energy frustration came out we had everybody with us this is what it was its and its here to stay we are demanding big changes from our government not just his resignation this is going for a long its an overhaul of the government and our institutions last question is what happens from here governor says hes going to resign thats a victory for this the protesters on the streets what happens now well what happens now its yet to be seen but its not just to put another interim government which is going to be one that is we dont want her eager its got to be clean its got to be fresh its got to be someone new and genuine and honesty we need transparency and honesty but i dont know what the future holds for us to puerto rico is a territory of the United States for the people the puerto rican people always feel like theyve been struggling being a territory struggling through Hurricane Maria that destroyed this island. What are you asking of washington now were asking of washington we want our fair share we want the president to really think of the people and not the government who put us in the situation we want to be part i get out of the United States but it hasnt been easy for us because weve been insulted as well by the government by congress we are demanding fair a presentation in our fair share and some of us really want to and our state of commonwealth and the law colonialism we dont want that because it hasnt served us well very last thing the thousands of people that were on the streets tonight give me in one sentence what that felt like to you when the governor said he would step down and everyone was cheering what did you feel in your heart at that moment in one or 2 sentences i felt that sense a relief because if that did not happen we would have had violence on the streets a sense of relief a sense of empowerment and a vindication that this was the right call and he finally heard us thank you very much i appreciate it thats just one person you saw there i think she echoes a lot of the comments that you hear of people that were protesting tonight a sense of vindication here on the streets of san juan puerto rico just before you go a couple of final points closing thoughts from you i guess i mean were talking here but its not a big place were talking about technically its an unincorporated u. S. Territory once the protesters get what they want the the current leadership is gone is there a risk that its just a case of out with the old but in with the old because there seems to be a generational divide there as well and that doesnt on the face of it appear to be that many untainted politicians waiting in the wings to be offered big jobs. Yeah thats right thats pretty perceptive i mean this is an island thats governed by the old guard if you will oh you saw here is. Years old and younger they were out on the streets protesting and theyre saying weve had enough we are now going to take our future of our island in our hands and i think thats what youre seeing a lot here does this mean that the future is perfect for this island absolutely not but i think a lot of people here on the streets are feeling as she just said vindicated that they won they were able to go to the streets and demand a governor step down a governor that they view is not working in their best interest someone that was insulting them in private Text Messages someone that they view as corrupt even though he hasnt been charged with any formal charges of corruption and they said weve taken our Government Back were taking our island back i think thats a message here but clearly the days weeks and months ahead are going to be difficult in a sense of who governs this silence and where does a protest movement go from here and as to that idea gave you know who governs the island thinking about some of your washington based reporting that youve done for us here on aljazeera i mean puts a rico its hardly on the radar as far as the trumpet ministration and the trump white types is concerned very much literally politically and figuratively kind of at the end of the line almost. Yeah thats right i mean puerto rico is a island of only 3000000 people and its not really on the radar of washington in so many ways the representative to washington doesnt even have a vote in congress. So this is going to be the challenge in the future here and i think thats why you saw so many Puerto Ricans take to the streets because they felt that they were not represented they are not represented well as a territory of the United States so this might open up the floodgates if you will. So all sorts of different discussions here on this island about where they go from here on who governs them they have a local government and then they have the washington d. C. Government as well i think people here recording the war will recall you know but. Then i think i think what youre seeing here is the emotions of people coming out basically saying. We are now claiming this island for ourselves we now want to be governed by ourselves and we want representation and respect from washington d. C. I think we picked up a little on the line between us a new cable will carry on with our conversation for as long as the long lost so what do we think will happen over the next 10 days or 2 weeks because the governor has said yes im going all go on august the 2nd. Yeah whats going to happen is is. After the governor governor resigns who was supposed to go by local law to the secretary of state but guess what there is no secretary of state because he resigned last week because he was caught up in this entire political scandal as well so it will go to the minister of justice and she we think will be sworn in as the interim governor until elections are held november of next year but by no means is this political crisis over this is a celebration on the streets of old san juan right now were seeing that youre hearing that weve been seeing that here for the last little bit that weve been been here right now in these last hours or so but the fact remains is there is still a lot of challenges on this island how to rebuild 2 years after Hurricane Maria how to get the funds they need who will govern this island and where will this movement this revolution in the words of many of these protesters are saying in their worst not mind of their revolution where does it go from here and that is going to be the real question in the days weeks months and really perhaps even in the years ahead but i will tell you that everyone here on the streets said they have seen nothing like this people taking to the streets forcing their governor out they said look think about Everything Else in the future tonight they say or in the Early Morning of hours of thursday as it is right now here in puerto rico they say this is about their celebration of forcing a governor out someone that they deem is a is a person had to be out the 1st step they say in order to reclaiming their government get real is on to the ground 0 of a developing story in san juan good great to talk to you thank you so much. Will staying with a story Kenneth Mcclintock formerly the Lieutenant Governor of puerto rico currently a senior Public Policy adviser at polytechnic he says the governors resignation is an iconic moment for puerto rico i think that this is one of those for the working parent
