Or get dropped from brain leader of the brain or in gas bombs but good enemy great it would gaffigan your community there is no reason for there are planning. Before world war 2 there wasnt widespread use of pesticides there was reliance on some of the us but during and after world war 2 when Companies Began to develop these chemistries for war they were looking for new markets for the same chemicals and so turned to food in agriculture afterward things like organophosphates which. Their nerve poisons when then pushed into agriculture many of them are still used mites might spread and. Without war we would never pass decides thats maybe thats an irony maybe maybe not but one way or another way this is what we ended up with in the early seventys it was clear we had Problems Health problems and environmental problems weve never experienced before thanks to pesticides thats when the Us Government in the act of 51 provision of which allowed the continual production and manufacturing of pesticides that were not permitted for use here to be exported overseas that set up the whole regulatory loophole that created this allowed the circle poison to come true. Limited data from the e. P. A. In 2013 revealed that banned restricted an unregistered pesticides a manufactured in 23. 00 states to export only the e. P. A. Doesnt track the volume or final destination of these pesticides which are then applied to crops like coffee tea cotton fruit and vegetables and may indeed be imported back to the u. S. As pesticide residues on these foods the f. D. A. Only inspects 2 percent of imported produce so the true risk to the u. S. Consumer is unknown. Theres a contradiction here because i think when you look at Nuclear Technology were very careful in how we export that technology but you know i think one of the Major Concerns weve got to admit is that where we worry that an abuse of that technology or misuse of that technology will come back to her the United States in some way or another we need to have that same attitude with pesticides. You know when i step back and really think about the scope of what weve done its been a giant terrible tragic experiment it goes way beyond past asides to a specialist lead paint to flame retardants to all kinds of products Drugs Pharmaceuticals that. Were not properly studied and cleared for safety before we turned them into products all those products and all that export and all the damage thats been done for decades the 1st politician that really took notice of this was president jimmy carter when i reckon leave office had exhausted by effort to get congress to pass it but we had all the material to show that we were doing stuff and it was basically unscrupulous or illegal or as International Law goes but the manufacturers of these dangerous materials an item was so palpable that they obstructed what i did so they were they i could do with issued an executive order as a last resort and it precluded the distribution of sale of any material basically overseas that we couldnt d safely present to consumers in america i wanted the brand made in america to be to mean something. That i left office they descended on for president reagan while reagan and he agreed. To protect their rights they can take your selling. Pesticides and clothing and on prove or disprove drugs. To people over say to some of the manufacturers to get rid of it and not to have a big loss. For the 30 years after i left the white house the issue is still unresolved and i would say that at this point they are powered employers all Unscrupulous Companies and their loggers. Is even more powerful than it was when i was in the white house. When we speak of the circle poison we most often think of the danger to American Consumers we think of foreign grown food senator leahy was the 1st elected official after president carter order to try to stop the 2nd poison by introducing 3 bills in 1900. 12 when i 1st suggested we have a lot of pushback. By lobbyists in the senate we had not people in the senate who realized that it was important to stop to circle poison and we passed. Once i got to the house representatives walked his frame to work lot harder. And they were able to stop it from being in the final we tried to work on saturdays weekends everything else. On the bill but could not get that part through. There are very powerful interests to make a lot of money i sign things they know are contaminated and the fact that we might be able to make money and create a few jobs here and poison people in other countries where theres a bet as best us or lead paint is something we shouldnt do that. Its rumor you just send. Your the lead up that allows all your members to be able to say i fully agree with you or my god what you talkin about thats correct. Thank you mr chairman senator lugar i would like to. Welcome the other 6 exact Senior Executives of n. A. C. A Member Companies to join me on this panel today. One of senator leahys main opponents to the bill was chave room mr of room has represented the Pesticide Industry in washington for nearly 3 decades bans written state an argument in 1990 with senator leahy and others as it is today is that. We would rather that the United States be a principal source providing proper texan tools for farmers around the world and the incubator if you will for innovation for that kind of Product Development and the follow on stewardship that Companies Like those that are based here in the United States can and do provide over the years rather than having those needs served by product producers pesticide compounds from places that other than the United States. Do you think youd find everything safe or do you think youd find a whole lot more. Perhaps a little of both i will tell you when the agency undertook its investigation last year we did find a number of violations. And filed a number of cases against companies it was the 1st time that we had really enforced j. Vroom also had allies within the government linda fisher of the e. P. A. Also oppose the 2nd poison bell so take the case to linda fisher she was an e. P. A. Official who argued against a circle of poison bill during the 1st Bush Administration after that she went to work for months on to actually as a lobbyist after that she went back into Government Back as a high official of the e. P. A. In the 2nd Bush Administration and since then shes become a high official at department is a perfect example of how the revolving door of officials moving in and out of government regulating pesticides and other toxics and then going to work for the people that produce. Its plunge the country into further political turmoil the latest move comes as thousands of people protested for a 3rd day in the capital demanding what theyre calling a revolution they say the political elite has pushed lebanon to the brink of economic collapse they want the government to resign and hold early elections turkey says one of its soldiers has been killed in Northern Syria it says it happened during a Reconnaissance Mission and comes despite a truce in the area turkeys president has vowed to press on with the offensive in Northern Syria and crush Kurdish Forces if they dont withdraw from a proposed safe zone under a deal brokered with the u. Just off one of caracas his main highways the media media family collects as much water as possible from the mountain above. A nationwide blackout left millions without power a regular water supplies. But this water is not portable the Health Ministry is recommending people treat it with chlorine but with none available other than a maybe hopes that boiling it 1st will make it safe for her family to drink dr mighty ekadasi llopis says the increased consumption of untreated water in the last 3 weeks is making an already catastrophic situation worse of anyone in norway no reading we dont have the precise numbers yet but we know that the public and private hospitals theres been an acute increase of cases of severe diarrhea that require hospitalization including children under 2 years of age which can be fatal local and International Public Health Experts describe the crisis as a complex humanitarian emergency. When i step back and really think about the scope of what weve done its been a giant terrible tragic experiment. Probably the most dramatic way to understand the difference between domestic regulation and the lack of regulation once you cross the border as the facts Pesticide Use and people is just south of the border in mexico take the sonora desert split down the middle by an arbitrary border between countries so on one side pesticides that cant be used are being used on the other side they are used and there is evidence of the are facts. In 1998 dr conducted a study of pesticide exposure in mexico she compared the children living in the pesticide intensive yaki valley to those in the nonexposed hotels. After playing catch with the children and observing them dropping raisins into a bottle cap found disturbing differences in hand eye coordination between the groups of children. She. Looked at 4 and 5 year olds and 5 and 6 year olds and one of the things she asked them to do is drop picture of a person and found that the children in the non examples areas through people just like i think any kid anywhere you could tell they were people drawn by very Young Children many of the children in the highly exposed areas to pesticides just to scramble you couldnt even tell that they were people. E u s n l r r g e in. The woman was on my list looking for men i was to go see this one as usually you mean that you will be only one of the 1000000. Im in the thankless it means you have to start with. All her mobility to be with you stories and not because you need. To be here but i want to write a script as warnings for melissas theyre like well bores that are out there because youre honest. So i would do that but a mystic of what i love it can end up you cant because im proved was a time at the talks of course. Its a little bit about your level of the little bit of earthly were. A little bit in the book for it theres a pool in my illustration here. You. One of the best examples of a place where people are chronically exposed to chemical pollution is in louisiana between baton rouge and new orleans along the mississippi where theres 150 Industrial Facilities all along that corridor. In fact the industry calls it the chemical corridor residents they have a different name for it or they call it cancer alley. In many communities especially here in louisiana you can look out of your bedroom window and youre looking at a smokestack and you smell the toxic fumes on a daily basis we have lost historic africanamerican communities because of the toxic exposures from those companies warranting the relocation of those communities and the entire towns of these historic communities have been raised and only thing you now see if theres any found that they once existed might be their own cemetery grounds while the facilities have gotten larger and expanded into those historic communities that once lived and thrive in this area. Theres a culture in the state that really gives the industrial corporations running these facilities a blank check. They pay nothing in property taxes they get to do their Campaign Contributions and basically elect whoever is going to be in the legislative control of lawmaking in the state they have a lobby that denies and takes away rights of citizens in the state for health care for Health Monitoring in the event of a toxic exposure. So were in a real sad situation in terms of the power that is industrial corporations have in louisiana and Companies Like monsanto along with. Monsantos it is like all big ever come across Companies Highly profitable and highly influential in political circles few years ago the complete. A 100000000. 00 expansion of the round up plan for instance in cancer alley wed welcome our governor bobby jindal and our 1st lady so pretty agenda. Governor jindal whose wife is a foreman one son 2 employee praised the expansion of the round up plant in 2010 every year since then this plant in cancer alley has had the most toxic releases in the entire state. Is really important remember theres a real difference in any pesticide between is active ingredient which in the case of roundup for example is go ifas 8 verses all the surfactants an urge to go into that full pesticide when its sprayed and to demonstrate this research it had to ponds with frogs in them in one pond you just put the active ingredient of roundup like to say very little impact on the frogs in the next pond he put the whole formula devastation 8090 percent depending on the developmental stage of the frog of death in those frogs so that shows you the difference between just an active ingredient and the whole formula it turned out the surf acted that part of round up that makes it stick to the crop was so fatal working with the other ingredients in in roundup so failed of those frogs so roundups legal by the way round up is in the band chemical so one thing thats important to consider is on some levels it doesnt matter whether an agricultural chemical has been banned or restricted very much yet because we simply dont know what the negative effects of most of these chemicals will be over time theyre not studied as complete compounds that are isolated neuro chemical tests that are performed on them of course theyre not studied on human beings that would be an ethical so essentially its a big experiment and we just dont know whether its regulated that theyre not shouldnt prohibit us from speculating and also investigating what are the effects of these little chemicals some of the. Maybe as bad as the bad ones. A standard argument against. A Health Environment and other regulations in the country or for export is that its harmful to business which of course it is and if bins can kill people freely a lot more profitable than if you have to Pay Attention to it to seeing new look at the effects on people and so on on the other hand if you do care about harming people above its just a matter. Of fact its kind of interesting in this country but. The Major Industries like the lead as best as tobacco the Chemical Industries have 6 often succeeded for decades in the poisoning people we consciously you know the person who perfectly well the children are going to die of lead poisoning but youve got to make profit of course but when you get to export its a little more vicious because here whats happening of course is. That the domestic population has become organized enough and active enough so theyre saying you cant heal us a so then the idea is if it will kill will kill people who are more vulnerable and thats what the export is but yes its good for business and that it. Despite these threats so fear and the mothers continued their fight they ultimately succeeded in getting a local ban on aerial pesticide spraying within 2500 meters of homes. About 2 years ago the Prime Minister put on invited me to help a town become 100 percent organic so what weve been doing in these 2 years is my team goes twice a year and works for the farms and the brittanys come and train at our farm and there are though maybe practicing legal logical and without it with no chemicals and we have no pest enough it at all we have lots and lots of insects. To trans ambitious plan to make all local farms organic would make it the 1st country in the world to convert to a fully organic agricultural system and ban the sale of pesticides. Just nibble a. It has been always very important because our country has very little land under cultivation and of the whole country we have only about it percent of the understood actually edible and off that because of our limited Human Resources we only contributing one to one percent of the land and to keep that percentage very low percentage of land cultivatable for a long time it is important for people to make sure that this is enough organic matter so that the soil doesnt degenerate. Because generations this is the only the land that we have to farm on and on to use it up in one generation and not leave productive land for the next generation so it has always been a tradition that is taking cattle. Some of them out of. The bush on government has very very clearly decided to not measure growth which measures only how much commerce takes place and of course you can have lots of growth by 1st creating best decides the Pesticide Industry makes lots of profits thats grow people get cancer the same Pesticide Companies sell you a patented gobs of medicine thats growth this group is not measuring welfare. It is measuring destruction death at illness some undecided was going to make happen is the objective. And therefore they focus on Gross National happiness and the Prime Minister when he wrote to me he said theres only one way i see growing Gross National happiness its by growing. Bhutan is not alone after seeing the devastating effects of Pesticide Use in their communities Small Farmers around the world are turning to sustainable methods of agriculture. It again and im going to be an ac went down your liberal joe as a single guy in your case yes a that we were in it there were either direct them when it down. He one of the name of the town meant in the motel locus of way but it was hed seen a looser than in fact he says hell give me god. And i see lexie thing if i shook as an idea but he ducked it in and i thought that he made there we had to take up and we figure he is at the end im not signing up to dallas we dont need just one with reporters any good night yes if they do it and they mean its immunity i guess and what i have found in my 25 years of working with biodiversity but going to build ecological Agriculture Systems is that chemical free boys and free Agriculture Systems which intensify ecological processes which intensify biodiversity produce more food and money but thats the way we must cope precisely because the populations increasing. Keys duffy and us getting the system from media has to come its nothing meerkat what i news sisto focus it on the good on the border and as you know this is the most are random quite interesting going to use against the media focus on the channel supro p. Detractors called it is now turning into a 30000000000. 00 a year business to only agriculture businesses growing but also more importantly people started asking questions we need people to say we dont want the hazards we dont want to support the hazards we all want to export our chemicals we dont want to import poisons on our food we want communities where food is produced to be safe we want our food to be safe we know the systems exist we need leadership desperately we need an uprising. Hello there weve had one or 2 showers across areas of the middle east in the last few days and you can see some bits and pieces of cloud working their way eastwards and this is where indeed we have seen one or 2 showers now through sunday we still have the chance as you cross into these more northern sections of iran but also across into turkey and at times we could see some heavy thunderstorms certainly by monday and those shows like you do out there whether it be for the east was time which is not too bad 34. 00 celsius across into baghdad and 23. 00 across into kabul now further to the south again temperatures here they have been coming down slowly the humidity has been improving slightly as well were going to temperature of 31 in muscat on sunday and temperatures in the mid thirtys really for doha 35 as you can see there on monday and 35 across into to riyadh further to the south down into Southern Africa again weve had some eastern areas of madagascar mostly dry sunday as you can see there but wanted to show is likely into cape town 22 so feeling a little bit cooler temperatures about the average for this time of year and then its a fine warm day sunday into durban then by monday we could certainly see wanted to showers that again weve got these fairly strong on shore flow but staying very warm again for the next couple of days in johannesburg on monday a high of 33. Talk to notice there are we know they dont believe in the 2 state solution the do you still believe in the 2 state solution we listen what i said was that pakistan would never start a war im anti war we meet with global news makers and talk about the stories that matter although to 0. Aljazeera. Where every. Corner. Under on the streets is cabinet ministers quit the coalition as the pressure grows on lebanons leaders to fix the economy. Slowing down jordan this is obvious here at live from doha also coming up. Thousands risk arrest in hong kong and join them until government launches protests and a 21st with. Ours johnson is forced to send a letter to the e. U. To delay braggs it but says he didnt sign it. We did the mecca right now in the economy cabin. Passengers shake a leg to beat jet lag as airlines attempt to push the limits of commercial flights. Welcome to the program protesters demanding political reform in lebanon ive been given the unexpected boost the head of the christian force his party. Has announced his ministers will resign from government well crowds of demonstrators celebrated the decision but theyre demanding deeper political change tens of thousands of taking to the streets across the country since thursday to protest against tax increases and alleged political corruption lets get the latest now from santa who joins us from the lebanese capital last night was the biggest protests weve seen so far was this telling us about the momentum of the demonstrations. Well its only growing very large protests not just here in the lebanese capital but across the country people taking to the streets d staying in the streets until the early hours of the morning and as you can see behind me theyre returning to the street so the message they are giving is that this is not going to end we will continue to demand the resignation of the government and not just the resignation of the government. A new political elite but this is where the problem lies because this is it is a spontaneous demonstration there is popular anger but now they have released this statement saying that they are going to create a new committee theyre going to come together to put some sort of an action plan and a Political Program on the way forward so that they would be able to present their plans officially to the government but this large turnout was clearly a message a message to the Ruling Alliance who are refusing to step down it is a message 1st of all to the Prime Minister. Said that there would be a 72. 00 deadline 72 hour deadline which ends tomorrow to present a new plan that not will not involve imposing taxes on people the reaction of the people here is that no we dont trust you any longer it was also a message to hezbollah which in many ways. Yesterday the secretary general challenge the people when he said you cannot topple the Ruling Alliance and if we take to the streets then we are able to change the balance of power so in many ways he dismissed this protest action so people are angry theyre calling for a general strike tomorrow on monday that means the country is going to be paralyzed for the 3rd straight day so many questions are being answered on what can be achieved but there is no doubt what we have seen in lebanon over the past 3 days is unprecedented people from all the sects coming together in a rare show of unity against the leadership against those in power against the political establishment which has been in power really for decades and the political fallout so what has started the head of the Lebanese Forces party has announced that his ministers would resign from the government what impact is that. Well yes for ministers in cabinet some earshot of the head of the Lebanese Forces. His resignation has still not been accepted by the Prime Minister but the government is not going to fall by by by this move but people here are saying in one way or another its hypocritical because some your child is part of the ruling establishment he is part of the government and its not just that people feel that some politicians are trying to ride on the wave of anger trying to push their own agenda so near shah has long been in the opposition he opposes sadat how do you even know that they were allies a few years back but he feels that saddam how do you he has been too accommodating with the Ruling Alliance the pro the hezbollah led Ruling Alliance so they would like to see him take a more harder line were seeing other politicians like christian leaders hamish may go saying back to you know a subtle how do you he needs to resign he gives political cover to this has led pro iranian. Government so this is the question its this country is deeply divided politically and theres this deep sectarian divide and these different of the different political. It does have allegiances but outside some are pro iran some are pro saudi arabia some are pro america so this is what people want to and they want nationalist leaders they want people who are you know whose loyalty is to lebanon and not to the different Political Parties but whether or not they will achieve their goals thats hard to say right to say to her there in beirut say no thank you turkey says one of its soldiers has been killed in Northern Syria it says that happened during a Reconnaissance Mission and comes despite a truce in the area turkeys president has vowed to press on with the offensive in Northern Syria and crush Kurdish Forces if they dont withdraw from a proposed safe zone under a deal brokered with the u. S. Kurdish fighters have to leave an area 32 kilometers deep into syria but the u. S. Says its moving all of its forces withdrawn from Northern Iraq Northern Syria into iraq to prevent a resurgence of i still dont know drums decision earlier this month to pull out u. S. Troops was widely condemned as a betrayal of kurdish allies one of the president s rationales was that he wanted to bring american soldiers home and i had a discussion last week with my french counterpart and i had a conversation with the nato secretary general we both agreed on the importance of continuing the defeat isis campaign and we agreed to have a meeting on it this week in brussels and so i think thats important we plan on to continue that certainly will be discussed at military level is what does the next phase of the counter isis Campaign Look Like and and i know thats at the top concern of mine 2nd only to protection of our forces coming out of syria but weve got to work through those details and thats again a principal reason why ill be meeting with our allies and partners this week. Prodemocracy activists in hong kong are once again running against a ban on face mask steering protests some of the modifying it by Wearing Masks antigovernment demonstrations started 5 months ago sparked by an extradition bill which was later shelled a protest some widen calling for more democratic rights legend brown joins us live now from Hong Kong Agency how much of a risk is it for people then to be taking part in this protest today. Vote well down all these people are taking a risk because as you can see many of them are wearing face masks and of course the government recently imposed a ban on the wearing of face masks i protest so many of the people here are taking an enormous risk and of course this is an unauthorized protest which means its banned effectively illegal which means that any one of these people who runs a risk of being irish was arrested and yet as you can see people are continuing to defy the authorities they are managing a fight in large numbers here on kalou side on sunday afternoon tens of thousands of people i would estimate and i think its important for the organizers of this demonstration to show that in effect there are still a lot of steam to this protest movement because in recent weeks weve seen the the protest numbers begin to decline but thats not happening here they are marching now to the west scowling trade station and as a result of this protest main roads here on counting side have been shot a number of train stations have been closed and already were starting to see the protesters erecting barricades now these demonstrations daryn as you would know tend to follow a familiar pattern they start off peacefully week with families and ordinary people marching but by Late Afternoon early evening the whole mood and tone of these protests tends to change thats when we see you know molotov cocktails being thrown thats going to be. See bigger barricades being erected fires being started and already weve heard reports of more vandalism the softer new north train stations being targeted and also more deliberate targeting of of Mainland Companies companies here in hong kong that have connections to firms on the mainland there and an agent as you say the size of the demonstrations today suggests the movement is certainly not running out of steam. And actually down whats interesting is the the protests today very much chance or sort of International Theme many of the protesters are waving the flags of catalonia they say that the people of catalonia have been supporting hong kong and the people of hong kong support the people of catalonia and of course you see as always the flags of the United States they still believe that the United States is the best hope for hong kong in trying to resolve this particular crisis and also the flag some other countries including germany the message theyre sending out today is also thank you to the world for supporting hong kong but as to where we go from here daryn 20 consecutive weeks on its still very hard to say but its quite clear who the protests are not going to end anytime soon all right agent brown there in hong kong agent thank you. Now the u. K. Has asked the e. U. For a 3 month extension to briggs it Prime Minister Burns Johnson lost a crucial vote in parliament forcing him to send a letter requesting a delay he didnt sign it and also included another document saying an extension would be a mistake the u. K. Was due to leave on the 31st of october but as the drama in parliament unfolded hundreds of thousands of people marched to london to demand a 2nd referendum it was a 4th rally of its kind since britain versus the leave the e. U. In 2016 hours it was really chalons was there. You know. Its fair to say demonstrates is that the peoples vote march dont like breaks it much thats an easy thing. To stunt was speaking to. What. 7 they turned out in their hundreds of thousands in london hoping m. P. s voting on Boris Johnsons brecks it deal in parliament would hear them. Because we dont want to peoples vote is appalling so no deal is bad yes yes the only thing you would like is im a right i want to go back to the people and if the people in that sense we still want to leave youd be happy with that would you much happier but of course most hope a 2nd referendum would overturn this particularly if the levi could be split between Boris Johnsons deal and no deal why you hear well im french so we has with me in 50 yes im raising my children have paid my taxes i do voluntary work and im treated like a 2nd class citizen for a deal thats been a wreck the economy and the future of my children we have screwed up big. Butts m. P. s didnt reject Boris Johnsons deal and they havent given the country asunder a referendum. All they have done is passed an amendment which
